I want to shrink the C Drive (Vista Drive). Actually 111GB is free out of 236GB on the C Drive but I am only about to Shrink 6GB and even when I try to Shrink the Drive by 6GB I get an error. I want to create a new partition on my hard-disk. These are the screen shots:

How can I solve this problem?

Hello Looi76,

I'm not sure that you will be able to shrink the C: partition without having to use a 3rd party program. You may be only to shrink that amount space due to unmovable allocated space for System Restore, page file, shadow copy, etc.. Vista Disk Management is basic and limited in what it can do. Only a 3rd party disk management program can move this allocated space to allow you to shrink the partition.

For you "Access is denied" error, check to make sure that the owner of the C: drive is set to Trusted Installer and that your user name account is allowed full permission.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The owner is already set to Trusted Installer!

When you right click on the C: partition and click on Properties, Security tab, and Edit button, does the SYSTEM and Administrators group (top pane) have Full control checked under Allow (bottom pane) ? If not, check the box for it and click on OK.

I have used a program called Paragon Partition Manager (a 3rd party program). While checking the files and folders before partitioning, cross-linked files were found and an error occurred. Then I googled Cross-linked files and it showed that they disturb the partitioning process! How can I find these files and fix these files?

Try de-fragging C before attempting Shrink
