Depending on which edition of Vista since Ultimate supports more then Home Premium you would want to match the present memory installed as best as possible.

If you are not running Cad programs or some other memory grabbing softwares 4gb is already over what most will use to start with. The rest simply goes to waste.

Hi lordvader, welcome to the board.

It is likely that you have all 4 banks fill with 1 GB of rams. For 8 GB, you will have to replace them with 4 x 2GB. Now, you need to find out the brand of mobo and then go to the manufacturer to look up a recommended ram list for best result.

However, I agreed with the post above that 4 GB is way enough. My system listed in my spec never use more the 70% of ram regardless what I throw at it.

Hope this helps.

I'm always seeing about 2.6-2.8gb available out of the 3.5gb total available in the 32bit edition of Vista with 4gb on here. Along with the specifications for the board the invoice from Alienware should show what brand as well as speed of memory was installed.

Also, Vista has 2 Alienware operating systems right? I know of one that holds 2 gig sticks and the most you would be able to put on it would be 2GB x 2. Wich would give you 4 gigs of ram with you have, indeed. I'm not sure if they make 4GB sticks for Vista Alienware.. Depending on wich system it is that you have though, i'm not sure. Sorry. Alienware inc would be the best bet to talk to in you're situation.

Home Premium x64 supports 16gb. Ultimate x64 supports 128gb. Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows)

The Windows 2003 32bit server edition supports some 32gb there. But how many run programs that need even half of that?

Planning to run Cad or server type applications? Simply adding more memory when you already have 4gb installed can actually slow things down rather then see any performance increase.

I believe the poster's question was can I add more RAM? That question was answered. As for the efficiency of that RAM being run...well, like all things, it depends on circumstances, and is highly debatable. At any rate he's only asking about 8, not 16 or 128 :)

The x64 m15x/m17x will support 8GB RAM Max due to a chipset limitation (2x4096MB DDR2-PC2-5300 kits) . Current BIOS should support ram, but I would install latest BIOS version in your Hive just to be sure. (m15x is BIOS x36)

The m5750/m5790/m9700/m9750 Only support max 4Gb RAM due to chipset limitations and require BIOS updates for extra ram support from 2GB to 4GB (i.e., m5750/m5790 BIOS version 1.19)
The m17 only "officially" supports 4GB of DDR3 Ram @1066MHz PC8500.

The m17 has the Intel® PM45 + ICH9M-E Chipset, and has the ability to address up to 8GB of DDR2/DDR3 RAM @ 667MHz, 800MHz, 1066MHz, but Alienware "officially" only supports 4GB. The current BIOS may support installation of up to 8GB of adressable ram minus peripherals and reserved GPU memory (512MB or 1GB depending on config), or may require a BIOS update. The only way to be sure is to install 2x4GB sticks and see.
