Hi
I was just wondering what the benefits of over clock is.
Iam runing a amd 2.6 quad core the system tells me i can take it to 3.2
my cpu temp is between 40 and 42 at idle it can go up to between 54 and 58 at load

AMD don't clock well at all, there are real benefits from OCing but only if you can get it up far enough...

your load temps are pretty good so that wont be an issue, im guessing you know how to OC your rig..?? just wet your feet in the BIOS with slight adjustments & see how it fairs.....

whats your cooling like..?? temps will soon rise on the stock cooler...

i was just checking your boards specs, i don't see any advanced OCing features, but it does have C.P.R. so it must be possible

you should manage 3ghz - 400mhz over stock if your lucky

As has been previously stated, AMDs do not overclock all that well. With Intel chips you have been able to get well over 1GHz overclock however AMD has really only just kinda recently achieved this milestone.

As far as your temps go... umm, i would first get better cooling (or an Intel CPU). 58C quickly turns into 70C when overclocking. I have had my chip running at over 80C and, although no damage was caused, i would not recommend going too far, 4 - 5C over 60C with any CPU.

I have seen a few Youtube videos where people have had AMD and Intel CPU's running WELL over the 100C (on one i saw an AMD running at 250C) mark but pretty soon you hear a popping noise and see a CPU go flying.

If you want a new cooler i can recommend the Tuniq Tower. My CPU (on stock cooling) ran into the 65C mark on load, yeah something was wrong, but when i put the Tuniq Tower on my temps dropped to about 30C and 40C on load.

the fan on the cooler does it come with 3 or 4 wire conecter for the mother board

3 wires (You could always go passive meaning no wires at all).

It comes with its own fan speed controller that just goes into a rear PCI slot (It doesnt take a slot on your mobo just your case)

EDIT: Your mobo comes with both (3 pin CPU and 4 pin PWM) as far as i have read so it shouldn't matter

well i have had a look in the bois tonight and i have managed to take it from 2.6 to 3.0 the temp has gone up very much at all i will change the cooler at some point

the tuniq tower is big, but it's a great cooler, I had it before what I have now. and I'm not sure what I liked more. to be honest.

The Tuniq has a 3 pin plug so you can plug it right where the stock fan used to be plugged into the Mobo.. it will work fine for you. Only concern is on that small case from a manufacturer that the tuniq might be to tall.

I have an Antec 900 and the Tuniq (is a) Tower fits with about 1.5cm to spare. My case is considered to be a medium sized case sooo... it might not fit so great into a stock case (unless you are up for some modding?)

EDIT: FYI I am a risk taker when it comes to overclocking. On a 35C day i will and have tried to clock my CPU over 4.0GHz on air (Idle temps nearing 60C). Being an AMD you will, even with good air cooling, really only be able to achieve a 600-1000MHz OC however i am no expert. Good luck

Dinesh you won't be able to overclock since you have an HP product cause HP locks the bios.

If you are not prepared to turn your computer into an expensive paper weight then OC might not be for you. Yes many people overclock with success however there are those who murder there machines from relatively negligible OC. Get your voltages right (yes you actually need to be talking to someone, not leaving posts on a forum) and you should be good but a 35C day never plays well with computers.

Hi Dinesh.......


i can show you how to OC that laptop (BIOS permitting) but if we go too far, you have no way to reset the CMOS..?? im not sure how you would go about that on a laptop..??

& as the board wont be built for OCing it certainly wont have any form of C.P.R. or BIOS RECALL, so we could end up with a nice paperweight after our first attempt...:(

if your really interested in OCing throw together & cheap 775 rig & C2D from ebay & you'll have far more luck.....& you wont care when components die...;)

As mansrm81 said Compaq and other OEMs rarely have overclocking support built into the bios, and for a laptop I can pretty much guarantee that it's not an option.
