Vista black screen of death/moving cursor

Recently i was updating drivers for my motherboard when my desktop froze and i was forced to manually reset, after the reset the computer restarted normally but it was slow on logon and it was weird since it always acts fast, i tryed to finish installing the drivers and it froze up again! so again i restarted, when i did... BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH!!!

when i try to reboot i get the boot choices (start windows normally, safe mode...) and none of them work! is all the same black screen with the cursor, i dnt get a choice of "last good known configuration" either, i tryed pressing ctrl-alt-del and nothing happens!

does anyone know how to solve this problem without reinstalling windows? i have 300GB worth of stuff i dont wanna loose!

I tryed the windows vista disc repair procedure and it tells me it cant fix the problem, :sarc: i try system restore and it tells me there is no restore points set, which it cant be true because a few days ago i opened system restore and saw tons of restore points from before.

I NEED HELP! this is killing me:cry:

Hi aftermathsample, welcome to the board.

Was there anything wrong before the updating? Were you updating the BIOS or chipset drivers? What exact drivers are you updating? Can you boot into safe mode? if you can, go ahead and backup your data before doing anything. Have you been mass around the inside of the case before this happened? May be you have to reinstall after all.

It is helpful for diagnostic if you post your spec of your computer.

Ive had the computer for over 6 months now and it has never given me any trouble of this kind, yes i was updating chipset drivers and it the middle of the operation it froze, and here are my specs...

Built myself:
-Intel core2 quad Q9400 @ 2.66
-8GB SLI ram
-Asus P5N-D nForce 750SLI motherboard (the chipset i was updating from the nvidia website)
-Nvidia geForce 260GTX vid card
-Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit

Safe mode is one of my options to boot, but it has the same result as the others, black screen.. white cursor :(

Hi aftermathsample, it might have been just a graphic driver (180.48 or so) is needed because it is simply missing or the graphic driver within the package is obsolete for your new card. So download the driver and install it to see if it works. If it doesn't help, you will have to install the original driver pack came with your mother board.

I remember you posted that you are typing your massage in safe mode.
You can do all this in safe mode or you can download the driver with another pc and then install it in safe mode.
