laptop start up problems and problems in general

Hey everybody,

I fixing a computer for a friend and i have just been stumped about it. It is a Gateway Laptop that has Vista. I know the major problem is that the computer will not start up when i hit the power button. It will turn on and you can hear the fans going but then it all stops and nothing happens. The screen stays blank and it doesnt even get to the Gateway start up screen. After awhile i just power it down by holding the power button. the weird thing is that sometimes it will start up just fine and get to windows explorer and you think that everything is fixed but then it will freeze up on you and you must power it down starting the start up problems up again. i have made it through a couple of virus scans and took all the viruses that it had on it and i thought that that would take care of it but it didnt. it also has the problems of some of the keys on the keyboard dont work anymore and the touchpad doesnt work at all. i keep trying to install the drivers for those again but it keeps freezing. any ideas??

Thanks

well i would try all of those except now the laptop wont even start up. all that happens is that i push the power button and i hear the fans going then everything stops and nothing starts up. i end up just having to power down it and do nothing to fix it. i have no idea what to do next. i am thinking rebooting from the reinstalling disc that came with it if i can get it from my friend

the original problem was that it wouldnt start up at all. when i got it i fixed that and then moved onto doing virus scans and deleting them. then i needed to get the keyboard and touchpad to work again by trying to download them off the gateway website then it would freeze up and now wont even start up again.

that actually sounds like a hardware problem if the gateway splash screen isnt even showing, unless you can diagnose a laptop from the internals, theres no chance you will be able to fix the problem unless you send it back to gateway or take it to a specialised laptop repair shop.

The question was - What was the original problem or complaint and what actions have you undertaken up to now? The answer is NOT "I fixed it". You obviously didn't, or you wouldn't be asking for help.

I think what Norm is asking is what happened when the initial problems started? Was he surfing the net and all of a sudden it turned off? Went blank? freezed up? Was there a BSOD and what did it say? Did an antivirus program say there was a virus and boom!?
