Local Disk/System Restore/"eating" up space

Hello everyone,

I am currently a new registered user and was wondering if this was the correct place to post my problem. I have a issue with my Local Disk (C:/ Drive) and was wondering what was taking up so much space. I have a 1TB hardrive, currently on my Local Disk I have 136GB free of 454 GB. However, when I add up what I can find when opening the drive, it doesn't add up anywhere near the 317GB that it says has been used.

Now, I have currently installed...CCleaner, Eusing Regcleaner, AVG Free 8.0, and TreeSize, all of which I have run various times (still learning about TreeSize).

BEFORE I was getting scared because I had even less memory free (approx. 74.9GB of 454GB). But after running a Disk Cleanup...it knocked it down to it's current state. It still doesn't explain how I have so much memory used.

My only thought now is that there are extra copies of my folders and files. Or most likely this has something to do with Vista's "System Restore". I am not very adept at using this PC. Whatever advice you guys can give...try to dumb it down for me:confused: and tell me where to go (e.g. Control Panel>Systems>etc..)

And my System Specs are incomplete because I don't even know where to go to get all that information! So if you need to know something about my PC tell me where I might find it or just look at what I have for my System Spec.

Thank you very much, I'll be checking my post at least once a day so I'll try to respond quick if any of you pros have an idea.

G'Day Mike92,

Welcome!
Welcome to Vista Forums Mike92 :D , and a Happy New Year from Aussie Mate!!
You will find a great bunch of people here, always willing to help you if you get into any strife, and who are ready to answer any questions about Vista and all of its workings and interactions etc., that you may have.

Your 'My Systems Specs'

It will also help the helper " :geek: !!", if you just take a couple of minutes to read the Post info in the link at the bottom of my page, and then go to your User CP to put as much detail into your 'My System Specs', as you possibly can. It sure saves typing it out over and over again when you need assistance, and will often mean a quicker reply from the 'helpers'......" :geek: :sleepy:  :geek:  !!!!"....Weird bunch that they are.

Your 'Little Helper' - Vista Forums SysInfo Tool.

You can access your system information quite easily, by downloading an extremely useful tool from Vista Forums>Tutorials>Software. With this tool, you'll be able to find most of the information for your ' My System Specs' input. Access the tool here, and just follow the simple instructions for downloading;

http://www.vistax64.com/software-tools/176785-vistaforums-sysinfo-tool.html

I downloaded mine to the Desktop, where it sits, ready for use in any situation. However, thanks must go to Shao 128 and dmex for giving us the use of this great little number.

All Vista Forums Information.....FAQs.
The best method to find information about anything in this Vista Forum, is to just click on FAQ in the bar at the top of each page. You'll find this to be one of the best Forum resources, and the amount of detail in FAQs is well presented and easily read.

Any Problems in setting up? Just ask.

Enjoy your stay Mate. :D Cheers. sassofalco

PS. If you've got a free page.......Checkout Brink's System Specs

Ok I tried the system Restore trick you suggested but it only freed up a few GB. I'm still wondering why there is still used up space. What else can I do besides clean disk, defrag, and Ccleaner etc..I'm just confused right now.

And I didn't see the third Drive in the Command Prompt when I looked at the ShadowStorage. It's entitled, New Volume and contains a folder called Backup Set and inside that more folders all called Backup Files with different dates. Opening one of those shows a bunch of zipped up files that need WinRaR to extract but I don't touch them because hence the name "Backup Files".

By the way I downloaded that Vista Forums SysInfo Tool and added more info to my specs but still missing things that I don't think were found when I used the tool.

Currently, Local Disk C:/ has 139GB free of 454GB, New Volume E:/ has 60.3GB free of 465GB, and Recovery D:/ has 4.12GB free of 11.0GB. I only resized the Max Capacity of C Drive, since that is what appears to be the problem for me.

Okay Thank You Very Much
Mike
