How to Synchronize folders

Ok, so I've read through the windows "help", searched the internet and read many "helpful" articles, yet I'm unable to find any information on how to actually use the windows Sync center to synchronize a folder with a USB device. I've seen a lot of similar questions on online forums yet no one seems to answer them.

Maybe Microsoft assumed that their software would be so user friendly that they don't need to include instructions on how to synchronize folders, I don't know. But if anyone knows how to do it, please let me know!

Setting up Sync partnership with a USB thumbdrive device

1. Turn on the device and plug it into your computer
2. Open Sync Center by clicking the Start button
GetOpenContent.aspx
, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Sync Center.
3. In the left pane of Sync Center, click Set up new sync partnerships device should appear

Ah, there seems to be my problem. I can get into the sync center but I don't have a "Set up new sync partnerships" button. I have windows vista home premium, is this why I can't create synchronizations??

My version of vista is German, but surely this isn't the problem?

Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium versions of Windows Vista do not come with the ability to sync with network folder.

To set up a new sync partnership, click on the Set up new sync partnerships link on the left pane. You will then see the window shown on the screenshot below. If you have mobile devices connected to the pc you should be able to see them listed in the window below.

Once you see your device listed, select the devide by clicking on it. You should see a button above it with Set up written on it - click the button and you will be given options for synchronization. If you do not see your device, you may wish to switch it off and then on again and make sure that it is working.

You should receive some options for setting up your device as a sync partner along with how and when you want the syncs to occur. If you are choosing to sync offline files such as in the screenshot above, you will have to follow those instructions. For setting up a specific folder or file, you will have to share it first and then select the offline files setting.

I have gone through the same exercise. In Msft's infinate wisdom, they do not have a simple way to synch files with, say a flash drive. The instructions I saw posted in response to your question result only in the ability to synch media files with a USB device using Media Center.

I realize Microsoft has gone face first into the "play station" market, ignoring completely that there are those of us who do not want to watch TV on a PC or use our computers soley for entertainment. For people like us who actually USE our computers for meaningful and productive purposes, Msft has completely missed the boat (and I say this as a former Msft executive), thus the recent stock price of <$15.

I have found Sync Center to be the most FUBAR of all Msft features....ever....in the history of Windows. After 3 weeks of repair work after trying to use Sync Center to manage files, I went back to SyncToy to sync files. The newer version (2.0) is incrementally better than the first. With improvements in Vista's event scheduler, you can sync/echo/contribute most folders and files almost anywhere automatically.

If Msft really wanted to have a great sync capability, they would just add the mobile device support they have in Sync Center to SynchToy, give it an easier scheduling capability and they' have it.....but tell that to the "we know best" gamers they have building the O/S today.
