Hard Drive Failure and an error 100a code

I have searched for 3 days for an answer to this problem. I have talked to folks at HP, Tiger Direct, Geek Squad, you name it everyone agreed at first, now I get different answers!!!!! So I come to you.
I have a HP Pavilion dv6324us notebook bought in late 07 with Vista Home Premium, last week I got an imminent hard drive failure, but before I could do anything it just croaked. I had not produced the recovery DVDs. I checked the bios and could not run the HDD test, the answer was no ide detected, also the only boot option was for the DVD drive, no hard drive showed up, (this was the point everyone agreed on, the Hard drive was dead and not being recognized by the system). I bought a new hard drive from Tigerdirect and bought a recovery DVD from HP. I installed the new Seagate Momentous 120 SATA, inserted the recovery CD and things started to happen, Ahhh Bliss, as soon as I click the yes button to install the works WHAM a box with
ERROR CODE 100a if this code persists contact HP. I did, now they think the hard drive is OK, it's the mother board thats bad, or the connector, or the software. I hooked up a usb Drive to see if it reads in the bios and it does. ONE thing I do notice is the new hard drive does not get seen by the bios, so could it be the mother board or the connector? I would really appreciate any help that can be given, I don't want to keep throwing good money after bad, but even better would be to finally get an answer. Thanks

Hi gw122, welcome to the board.

Sounds like either bad SATA cable, bad connection or port. Have you try a different post? Also, replace SATA cable. Other possibility is your PSU went unstable which causing mb damage. PSUs in all big computer manufacturers are questionable in quality. So HP may be right about the mb is being bad.

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for answering, I appreciate it. If I may ask a couple of questions??
1. Would or could the mother board be bad if I plug a Western Usb in and then boot to bios and it aknowledges the presence of the western and the cd drive?
2. I do not know how to install a Sata cable in a laptop, I assume I could search for a video as to how it's done?
3. I

Hey thanks for answering, I appreciate it. If I may ask a couple of questions??
1. Would or could the mother board be bad if I plug a 160 gig Western in the USB and then boot to bios and it aknowledges the presence of the western and the cd drive but not the hard drive?
2. I do not know how to install a Sata cable in a laptop, I assume I could search for a video as to how it's done?
3. I did get an error message telling me the hard drive was gonna fail, Do you think I should re-install the old drive and see if the same thing happens? And if it does Do you think this would be more proof that the MB or cable is bad? Thanks again

Ok to answer your questions in order:

1) No. What it looks like here is a bad cable, or a bad connector. If the mobo can detect the external drive from BIOS, then it is a problem with the internal components there.

2) I have no idea either, but you could look it up easily. I stay away from laptops because of hardware issues. Though I should learn so I can fix my laptop when I go to college....... :(

3) No, I think the drive is dead. Do you have another computer? Put the drive in there, and see if it is detected. If not, then it is dead. Keep it if you want to get the Data off.

Now as for a solution!
I am assuming that the cable came with the computer, so go buy an aftermarket cable, and use that on the new internal HDD and see if it works.
If it fails to detect the new HDD with its new cable, then it most likely IS a mobo issue, which is a B**** to fix in a laptop. Buying a new one might be easier.

Well using your info, I rechecked my install procedure and LOL I found that the new hard drive did not come with the connector attached, I thought it dropped in kinda easy, anyhow I used the one from the old drive and everything worked fine. After downloading all the updates from Windows and HP, installing AVG free and Spy-bot it's working great, after I put Glary utilities and Bel-arc on I am Done. Thanks

Hi, I just read the thread and I have exactly the same problem.

I have HP Pavillion tx1000 from a friend of mine and it wasn't working

So I decided to recover the whole thing to factory settings but couldn't find a partition in the hard drive and didn't have the recovery disk either.

Though I felt like I was paying more than it really should cost, I purchased the recovery disk from HP as I couldn't find anyone around me who used tx1000.

then it failed, giving me a message 100a. Thinking it was the hard drive problem, I replaced the hard drive from my old hp laptop. then same thing again. replacing the hard drive doesn't work and no hdd test, no IDE found and when i try to boot from the hard drive it gives me no OS found.

I don't know what to do and i don't know what kind of connectors and cables you guys were talking about in the thread.

The hard drive, when i touched it, did get hot so there is some kind of connection but i don't know what is wrong.

Please help

Hi Jinwooolee, for HP system recovery is usually given choice of options when booting up; not to initiate by going into a certain partition. If you are replacing a bad hard drive, you need an OS disk not the recovery disk and, plus the product key some where taped to your system; of course you need all the drivers. So I suggest to put the original HD back and try again if you are not sure it is bad.
Good luck and post back.

Same error here.
I have a pavillion dv7-1285dx, On Friday I had a blue screen, so I called the hardware manufacturer a s recommended. I did a hard drive and ram test both of which passed. The tech recommended I do a recovery. I attempted to do so with the pre-installed software and got an error. The computer said there was no recovery data available. SO i ordered the recovery disk from HP.
Today they arrived and i got error 100a. 85 minutes later still on the phone with HP they tell me that i need a different disk and it was gonna cost me again.
Waiting on hold i was disconnected and had to start at peg 1 with HP, which left me not to happy. Long story short after many minutes of dead air on the phone, this rep said my issue was a hardware one and I needed to send the entire thing back and pay 400 dollars.
There is no way... the computer is a little over a year old. I believe form what i read here that it is my hard drive. reasons for this assumption. At one point the program trying to find the data said no HD detected. Since i been trying to discover the issue I have been hearing clicking sounds from the hard drive.
I keep getting error 100a and 100c while tryng to recover with the cd.
Does anyone else think its the hard drive or something more serious.

In the meantime I am going to order a replacement anyway.
