Anyone Experience Performance Decrease?

Hi,

I've installed Vista recently on my old hdd and after few days I started to notice strange things, during some time whille vista is running (like 20 hours), when I download anything (even at 200 KBs), music starts to stuck every 20 secs or so, when loading video and playing at same time, this happens even more often.

I thought it's my HDD so bought Caviar Black and after installing Vista, few days it was running fine, then again, today I start to experience the same thing.

It's probably memory management in your browser...IE and FireFox both have issues releasing used memory...
Re-boot once in awhile.

Yep, that happens to me when I try to browse and play music at the same time, more so when I am using WMP, if I use any other player, the hiccups seem to be cut to a minimum.

I know is a memory probelm but I just don't know how to manage it and since I don't do that often, I just discard it but, I sure would love to find an answer for it so I'll be looking at this post often.

Hm, maybe it's RAM issue? Should I just change with a new pair?

I don't think that it's memory management (unless you mean Vista's?), closed Opera, opened after few hours and while ~30 tabs were loading, my mouse kept stucking.

P.S. I run x64 on 2 GB RAM

My Computer

Its RAM. 2 gigs is MINIMUM to use Vista, let alone get good performance out of it. Plus, with x64 you may as well get more. I browse and listen to music (like right now) and I have no problem w/e.

Try grabbing 2 more gigs, it is only about $60 now its a good deal

Hi,

I actually forgot to say (sorry) that same happened on x32 Vista to my friend. What I found is:

Try SATA 4 (haven't yet) and some said that it can be due to Vista's DNS stuff. Need to set it manually, although I always do that. But yes, I notice that it happens when I d/l something from the internet (pages, youtube loading, files, etc)

My Computer

Yeah well more RAM should fix it. Once again, 2 gigs is the MINIMUM Vista NEEDS to run. Just run, not perform.

I made a custom build via vLite. Are there any "ram management" or anything like that features which can be removed? if so, do you know it's name.

I b/c removed useless stuff like chinese fonts, uac, scanner support, "human like natural search", etc, etc

What motherboard do you have, and have you installed the chipset drivers? Also, have you checked to see if there is a new BIOS for the board, as well as any new chipset drivers?

Also, I know you said you added two more gig of memory...but did you check to see that the original memory sticks were good? You can check the RAM by running memtest which can be found here - www.memtest.org

And to answer the main question - No, I've had no degradation issues here, and I multi-task a lot, like playing iTunes, watching TV through Media Center, and surfacing the net. Sometimes I’ll even do some photo editing using in Adobe CS2 while listening to iTunes.

I have 4gig of RAM (2x2gig) though – See my system specs.

Will try memcheck one, thanks.

Two different programs with different functions -

"Memtest86+ is software designed to stress test an 86-compatible computer's random access memory (RAM) for errors. It tries to verify that the RAM will accept and correctly retain arbitrary patterns of data written to it."

I used the above link for an explaination of what memtest does. The download page doesn't really do an adequate job in this regard - www.memtest.org

"MemCheck Pro automatically monitors and Optimizes System Resources."

At any rate your choice

Good luck

RAM shouldn't be an issue for such simple tasks like listening music on WMP.
If you were able to install Vista, then you had enough RAM for that already.

Use the task manager and check if there's a process getting and overly high usage of resources.

My advice has nothing to do with "adding more RAM" just to listen to music! It's about troubleshooting his "performance" issues by checking the RAM.

He "could/might" have some bad RAM stick(s) - sometime those things do happen - even "after" an OS install. :)

While your suggestion has merrit....so do others :)

Thanks

Oh, I saw nothing wrong with your suggestions at all.
I actually agree that is good to ensure the RAM is working properly when troubleshooting problems... odd problems.

So, all good. Here have a cookie. XD
