explorer.exe will not start

I am running Vista Home Premium on a system that has been stable for some time. Recently I discovered that when I attempt to log into my account it 'opens' to a black screen with only a movable cursor, nothing else. However, my wife's account continues to work normally I would have presumed a Windows update, virus, trojan, spyware, etc., would also affect my wife's account.

I have confirmed the registry key for the Shell is set to 'explorer.exe'. When I open Task Manager explorer.exe is not running. If I attempt to launch explorer.exe via New Task it will not start. I can access my account if I boot in Safe Mode. I have tried MSCONFIG and tried booting with no Startup programs and no Services with no change, still no explorer. System Restore has no restore points prior to 12/22/08 but that's not far enough back to correct the problem.

Am I missing anything else I can try to repair this problem, or am I going to have to launch the install CD to try to repair this?

did you try removing vista's user settings( I.E. the text box that authorizes your comp to execute your program initiated tasks) restricting any program initiated changes? (I am so juiced right now it hard to actually depict what I am saying) What I mean is when windows askes you to authorize any program to execute, have you removed that setting??(I think this is found in the user settings from the control panel. any help from a sober user would greatful!!!!!!)

yeah, gee... reading that post over, thats really stumping. did you try just running a System Files Checker yet?
This is a very useful post by Brink. In a nutshell, Run cmd.exe as an Administrator (cmd.exe in your vista search bar, right-click and select run as admin) and type the command sfc /scannow. Usually if you enter an erronous command, you'll get the full list of commands, but using sfc /? will also get you that detailed list. After running your first scan you can review the created logs

Sorry for the delay. Anyway, I ran the scan and sure enough it found some corrupted files. And sure enough it could not repair some of them, so I have the same issue. And since it doesn't list the files it found that were messed up, or the ones it couldn't repair, there's no way to manually replace them.

So I guess it's time to just run the install disk and hopefully that can repair the files.

Thanks for your input!
