I did try deleting all temporary files, cookies, etc. and rebuilt the index. I tried this since IE will hang after you use it for awhile. Now it gets to a point in chkdsk where it's checking the indexes then says "an unspecified error" and bails to the operating system.

I haven't tried a system retore or a system recovery. This is a new system and I haven't gotten around to doing an entire backup. I was thinking about trying a repair/upgrade. It's rather furstrating since I've never had any problem repairing the file systems in any of my other systems with XP.

Hummm, if its a bad connection on a drive why would it stop at keep stopping at 68% of the index checking? Being sata connections I would think it would be hard to not completely plug the connection in but I can check them.
Hey buck, may be you have got the point about the HDD hangs up at 68% though loosen SATA connection is a known cause for problems.

On top of what Loadbob suggest and your HDD is being ok, I would suggest a system restore to the restore point before having the problem. Regardless, you may need to start backing up data you like to keep since clean reinstallation may be reqire.

Good luck.

Bruce
Hi Buck, I would go ahead and replace the SATA cables with after market ones. Sometime they are bad even look well connected according to me own experience.

In answering to both of you and buck's situations, besides a clean reinstallation, a restore repair with the OS disk would work most of the time when restore unsuccessful within window itself.

Registry cleaning will not help; it often makes it worse. A few registry cleaner I tried had made my system unbootable. Guess what, a restore repair with the OS disk fixed it. If I want to clean my registry just for pace of mind, just use CCleaner if using at all.

Hope this helps,

Bruce

Re: chkdsk isn't fixing corrupt files

Hello buck351.
You can repair the Vista file system without re-installing and losing all your data.
Take a look at these two tutorials, if there are damaged files they can either be repaired or replaced.
If any of the repair options don't work in normal bootup try safe mode.
You may want to check for malware and clean your registry. I have included links to two free programs that will do just that. (back up your registry when prompted).
Scan with Malwarebytes first, then use CCleaner.
Also, you could try F8 at bootup, Load Last Good Configuration.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

Also try this:
Go into Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) and type this:
Code:
sfc /scannow
This will check your system for any registry or system file errors, then try to fix them.
