G:\ is not accessible - Access is denied

This morning I pushed my install of Windows Vista back to an earlier restore point about a week ago. I did this because an overnight unattended install failed (the install that happens when you close Windows).

Anyway, after the reboot, things looked fine. I then went to the Windows install s/w window and installed the importnat Windows updates. During install 2 of 3, windows jumped to what appeared to be a chkdsk (or similar) dos style window and started a check of my G drive (an external USB 500GB Maxtor drive) and appeared to delete the index from my G drive. Not good.

When I now look at the properties, it says the drive is 0 bytes used space and free space. I used PCFile Inspector but the utility could tell it was a 500GB driive but could not read or see any files.

I can see my other Maxtor drive (is coded a H drive by Vista), and I can see my Ipod and its contents (which has taken the I drive letter)

I took it to a friends place and he could see all files etc with his XP based system. I connected the drive to my wife's laptop which is Vista - it cannot be read and written to same as my PC.

I checked permissions and the SYSTEM and my Administrator logon had no permisiions. I changed the permissions to full access across the drive. Windows then listed the contents of the drive as it updated the files with new permission settings. So it can read the drive and it may be writing to the drive.

Numerous reboots during which I have changed the drive owner to myself, SYSTEM, gone into the registry and deleted the G drive entry, and still nothing.

When I connect the drive, it keeps coming up as drive G and the message that G:\ is not accessible; access is denied keeps recurring.

Properties still show 0 bytes.

I think Vista is screwed up somewhere for this drive and I would really like to access it on my PC to access a backed up directory. Very frustrating. Any ideas?

For any one who has a problem similar:

A tech from work advised me to connect the drive to a machine with XP Pro as Vista or XP home edition was guaranteed not to be able to do what I needed. I hooked up the disk drive to an XP Pro machine. This allowed me to turn off a parameter in the security tab which then allowed me to go to Properties, choose security. I gave that account full priveleges to the drive. I then reselected Properties and went to the Owner tab and I then set the Administrtaor account to be the Owner with full priveleges. I then added an account Everyone and gave it full access to the drive. The account settings were reset by XP Pro and now I have full access to the drive.

I bought a second drive and have an off site backup arrangement that will be rotated monthly.

Hellelujah and I really struggle with Vista Home edition not being able to reset the owner property for me.
