Changing from Vista 64 to Vista 32?

I have a newer computer purchased in August 2008, HP Pavilion a6530F. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium Edition (64bit)

Hard to find software to work on it, occassionally I can make something work by changing the compability mode or running as administrator. Had I known all this when I got the computer, I would not have bought it.

How much trouble (cost too) to have someone change from Vista 64 to Vista 32. I am guessing that entails new drivers etc. I am just a normal user, don't play games, only the granddaughter age 11 plays games like Nancy Drew. I have a 640GB hard drive which is way more than I ever needed. Was not aware of software issues like I can't use my Photo shop Sofware and other things I have.

Is it cost effective to have what I have redone somewhere?

Contact the retailer where you purchased the computer, and enquire about providing 32-bit media for it. Failing that, contact HP directly.

The only otheralternative would be to purchase a new Vista x86 DVD .

In either case, you'll endup reinstalling from scratch, because for the same reasons you can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit operating system, you can't diwngrade from 64-bit to 32-bit.

And which version of Photoshop are you using? Have you checked if there are any updates available for it that would fix the Vista 64 compatibility problems? Likewise, have you done this for all the other software you are having problems with?

    Currently dual booting between Vista x64 Ultimate Windows 7 BETA x64
I have been running vista 64 bit for almost two years and if the software is new and works with vista it has usually worked with 64 if it was good software.

What software doesn't run on your system? I have an HP HDX 16 w/Vista x64 and it runs most stuff fine. OK, I don't have Win 95 legacy programs...

A couple of programs didn't want to install... Photoshop Elements was one, so I guess you have that or an older version of regular PS... Also the processing program for an RP machine I have. I had to graduate to a full version of Photoshop CS3 and I was able to get a new version of the RP machine software from the mfr.

Drivers were another problem. The driver for my laser cutter is only a beta version and is unsigned, that was hell to get installed. And I needed to get new mice, my legacy Logitech's drivers don't install in any version of Vista (32 or 64)...

But 90% of my stuff runs just fine. Occasionally a glitch or two, which I don't know whether to attribute to software designed for XP running on Vista or 32 bit software running on a 64 bit OS. --ch

Can't help you about the drivers, but I'm almost positive that the CS4 version of Photoshop is 64-bit compatible. Don't know if you're willing to spend the money, but the option is there. Just do some research to make sure it really is 64-bit compatable.

I think we can all do without the irrelevant and unnecessary "it works for me" posts and the attitude that comes with them. He isn't claiming it's Vista's fault, rather it's the 64bit that is the problem. Not every piece of software works right on 64 even if the 32 bit version is "good". Your knowledge of mainstream large volume software is not of use here.


Getting to the actual problem at hand, here's the bad news; HP will no provide you with a 32bit copy of the OS, you would have to purchase Vista again.

So if you really have to go back to 32 bit it'll cost you, otherwise you'll have to spend some time searching for new software versions and learning about compatibly modes and while it'll get a lot better there is no guarantee that every program you want will work as it should.

No it's the software developer's fault for not updating their products to be compatible, but he can change his operating system, he can't make the software developers update their products.

Even though it's an HP i would contact them first and also ask Microsoft.

I know, I was just making a funny. Everyone blames vista but it is the software manufacturers that are not doing their part.

There's no attitude here and it's not totally irrelevant. I asked what software wasn't working... didn't get an answer...

So, the choice is to either try to re-install the OS as 32 bit or perhaps try and find upgrades to software that isn't running on 64. Which will be more expensive or harder to do? Depends on what software is involved...

It may indeed be possible to plead with HP to give them a 32 bit Vista... My experience with HP customer service was horrible, but maybe they will find someone over there that actually can and is willing to help.

I think there are a lot of 64 bit systems being sold in stores without customers really being aware of of what possible problems they might have. Especially as regards drivers... I really do think that software represents less of a problem, especially if you have more recent versions of stuff.

I bought into it with my eyes open, knowing that I was taking a risk (with my first machine at least). I was mostly pleasantly surprised as to how much DID work, I expected less. However, I AM angry with the laser people who don't seem to want to develop a legitimate 64 bit driver for their machine - lucky that I did get the beta driver to work or it would have been a disaster... --ch
