"drive is in use" when it's not

I thought I saw a post from someone who was having this same issue but couldn't find it. I am trying to check an ext hard drive for errors and when I try to "safely remove it" and keep getting the message that it is still in use when there is nothing using it, the light is steady. This happens for both my drives often. What gives?

Hello Dean,

It may be the index still working on the drives. If you like, you can use Option Two in the tutorial below to disable the index for the drives as a test to see.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/69564-index-enable-disable.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks! I did as was recommended on my Maxtor 1 Touch 125G but my WD My Book 1 T did not give me the option. I was having issues with both. Does WD not support indexing?

Dean

Not sure about that particular WD model. You might try disabled the index completely in Vista to see if that can help instead then.

I didn't, WD does not support 64bit OS, neither does SG. This is disappointing, I would like to be able to set some parameters on the drive. Like when it sleeps etc. Fortunately, I would never have found Acronis if their software did work.
