Vista Log On Problems

First off, sorry if this isnt in the right section, my first post.

Whenever I attempt to log onto my laptop, the screen says "welcome" and then goes blank before returning to the log on screen, this has only started occuring today and I have no idea what has caused it.

Vista Home Premium
Dual Core AMD 2.1GHz
2GB RAM

edit: i tried it in safe mode, it works in safe mode

alright, just done that, the problem still occurs.

i used start up repair as I hadn't used system restore before so was unable to do changes. Startup repair found no problems but still it wont load :(

i tried system restore once again but this time did it to an earlier date, its working again now, thanks for your help.
im going to make recovery disks straight away.
