Autorun never works

I have had this problem for a long time, but i'm beginning to get really sick and tired of it.

First and foremost, let me quickly explain the issue:

- Autorun NEVER works
- When i insert a disc or USB device, nothing happens
- When i go to My Computer and double click on the drive, Vista asks me if i want to format the CD/DVD
- Vista thinks that every CD/DVD i insert is blank... This includes mounting an ISO via Daemon tools

Here's what Vista shows when i insert Fallout 3:
34486xi.png

The only way i can access a CD that won't open is by going into command prompt, changing drive letters, then opening it from within there. Example:

D:
dir
setup.exe (or what ever file i want)

If i restart my computer with the CD still inserted, when i log in, and go to My Computer, the CD will actually load just fine. The icon changes to the correct image (such as if i insert a game CD), and everything looks good. Once i remove, then insert the CD, same problem occurs.

I have tried:

- Going into registry and enabling autoplay by adding a "1" to the particular registry value
- Flashing my DVD drives
- Re-install windows
- Uninstall DVD drive via device manager
- Going into control panel and editing autoplay settings

So far nothing has worked. Can anyone offer any advice, please!? I'm starting to pull my hair out.

Re: Autorun is screwed

Alright, i just disabled Vista's inbuilt burn ability via the Group Policy Manager. The only difference is that i'm now able to insert CD's / DVD's and double click on them.

Vista no longer prompts me to format a blank disc, but instead goes right into the disc itself and displays all the files inside of it.

Autorun still does not work, though.

Re: Autorun is screwed

Thanks for the reply Drwarf.

I have gone into Autoplay settings and changed everything, however it hasn't helped.

Vista pretty much does not recognise whether i insert a music CD, game, DVD movie, or anything else. All it seems to display is a regular disc with no space left in it.

For instance, here's what happens when i insert my Vista x64 DVD:
mmrkw4.png

And here is the DVD context menu:
2gwi3wn.png

Notice how it doesn't even recognise what i've inserted. It simply thinks i have inserted a basic blank disc.

So no matter what i change the autoplay settings to, Vista isn't concerned.

I have also changed the autoplay settings for what Windows should do when i insert a blank disc... But same deal... Nothing happens. I insert the disc, my drive spins up, then stops.

Re: Autorun is screwed

Shell Hardware Detection was set to Automatic (Delayed Start). I stopped and started the service.

It seems when i insert a CD now, my cursor actually changes to show that it's loading a CD, although after about 30 seconds, nothing happens after that.

edit: Also, i would like to mention that Vista has the same issue with my USB thumb drives. No autoplay whatsoever.
