can't fix Black Screen of death

I am having a major problem on my primary PC. I am currently on an old PC.

I use 2 PCs together networked. The PCs are side by side on my desk with each having it's own monitor. I use windows Vista on the newer Pc and windows XP on the older -- the one I am currently on. And I use a program that allows me to use one mouse and keyboard for both computers. It's called Synergy.

The problem is that sometimes when I watch full screen video on the Vista machine the synergy seems to cause Vista to crash if I am not careful. well.. I wasn't careful enough apparently. So when my PC crashes I usually use system restore to go to an older restore point and this fixes the problem. well this time system restore says there are no restore points for some reason. And when I try to boot in normal mode or safe mode there is a black screen and my mouse pointer is there and that's it. So I have no choice other than to restart and try again and I have the option of either going into recovery -- system restore - or "boot menu" and that is it.

Does anyone know of some other way I can get the system restore to work and revert to an older restore point?

I have tried the different Black Screen of Death fixes I have seen doing a google seach -- such as registry edits but they didn't work.

Also, I did have an issue recently where whenever windows update updated my PC it was causing a crashing problem and I would have to go to a previous restore point. So I had to disable Windows update to keep it from crashing until I could could backup my files before attempting to fix the problem. Maybe ths is what is part of the current weirdness?
