Logon screen won't appear

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the forums and I must thank my friend for directing me here as well! Seeing how he messed up my computer to begin with and now onto my question. I'm having trouble getting to the logon screen today after I shut it down yesterday last night. My friend's son was using my laptop to write up a research report for class and decided to go -exploring- in the system32 folder. He said all he did was move an authui file? I tried using my vista recovery disks, but I can't seem to locate them with all cluttered junk laying around the room(still cleaning). I hoping in the meantime that there might be an alternate method in fixing this problem? I'd much appreciate the assistance

You may be able to do a System Restore using a restore point dated before this problem instead to fix it.

Hello Shawn and thanks for replying,

I've tried using that method after I login into my previous version XP which automatically shut down the computer and went into dumping physical memory to disk? Afterwards I restarted it and downloaded this recovery program which led me to repairing/using the system restore and apparently there isn't any points to restore :cry:. Which I know I did one last week :shock:.

Is there anyway of removing XP from my laptop,Shawn? I haven't any need of it being there since its probably just taking up space if does that is

Well, if you end up reinstalling Vista, then you can just delete all partitions and format the drive durring the installation of Vista to do so.

Alright, I've cleaned the entire place whilst looking for the vista reinstall it on my computer, but can't find it. I only found the upgrade package to Vista Ultimate I brought a few weeks ago to upgrade it, but never got around to do it. Is there any other solution or program I could download that could fix the problem?The logon screen still won't appear(the mouse pointer is still visible and mobile).

Ah, I have one and hopefully final question. What's the difference between the 32 bit and 64 bit? I'm not even sure what bit version I have.

You can tell what version of Vista you have by pressing the Windows Key + Pause/Break key. Under System, you will see what version you have to the right of System type.


This will help explain the differences between 32-bit and 64-bit in detail.

The main thing is that if you want to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, or the other way around, you must do a clean install to do so.

Just a little update: It went well :) feels great typing on my laptop again

I'm having a slight problem with activating windows as it won't take the upgrade activation key. How could I remedy this problem?

Did you install the upgrade version as described in this tutorial?

If you did, then you should be able to do a phone activation to get Vista activated.

Alright I managed to do the clean installation on my laptop and got it activated online. Thought I have a small problem with my son's new used laptop I brought him three days ago. I swear the place I purchased it from look like they had stolen goods...can't complain since I got a nice price for it. Anyway, everything worked on it just fine even had MS office on it, but I wanted to like completely clean it out since I didn't really trust that shop I purchased it from. I purchased home premium to do a clean installation(after several attempts at it) on it, the computer starts acting weird which it never did before I did the clean installation on it. He told me something was wrong with it so I decided to take a look at it. After a while using his laptop (say like ten minutes) the internet stops working on it, the web browsers stop loading ( firefox not working can't even end process on it from end task). Thought it still shows the internet is still connected just not receiving and sending. The connection is fine itself since I'm using it right now obviously. Shut downing or even restarting his laptop is late as ever. Whenever I restart everything works fine for 10 or so minutes and it goes right back to whatever is causing its problem. I'm at a complete lost at what to do to remedy this issue on his laptop.

Did you install all of the device and motherboard chipset drivers?

You might also reset Internet Explorer to see if that may help if you have a bad add-on installed for it.

No, I don't believe I did. However, I do recall a pop-up appearing several times about install a device, I had thought it was my son's little game device he had connected to the USB asking to be installed again.

Internet browsers or simply the internet on my son's laptop. The connection is fine, its just his laptop just stops working after ten minutes or so. It varies from time to time.
