sfc scannow reveals corrupt files

My question is, after doing a restore to original condition and then running sfc scannow is it normal for a New HP pavilion dv4-1125 Entertainment Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home premium 64-bit Edition with service pack 1 operating system to show corrupt files, or is that a problem?

I am not sure what files are corrupted. I bought a brand new HP pavillion laptop and it blue screened on me scans done revealed no problem with HD or memory. HP told me to run kill disc and use the restore discs they sent. I did this then as they suggested I ran sfc scannow and it showed corrupt files. HP told me to send it in for them to repair so i did but when it came back (with no notes on what they did) I ran sfc scannow and it revealed corrupt files. I have been told by Best Buy Geek Squad that this is not a problem it is just because HP have added some things and sfc scannow picks them up as 'corrupt files' However HP have not told me that they don't seem to know anything and just say they will ring me. I am wondering if the 'corrupt files' found by sfc scannow are a problem as HP seem to imply or are just the result of HPs additions and not a problem as the Best Buy Geek Squad suggest. Any ideas?

That could be. removal of the "crapware" and cause errors/corruption in those removed programs. I, myself, always reinstall and selectively install those programs on the recovery/driver disk I want.

Kangaeroo,

If you suspect registry corruption, you can also run repair from the Vista disk. That will fix any corrupt Windows files.

I appreciate your help but I am still not sure if the fact that sfc scannow reveals corrupt files after re formatting means I have a problem or not

Well, you may never notice the corrupted files ever again. But there is a chance it will cause a problem, and it is better to try and get it fixed now and save the trouble later.

thanks I am trying to get HP to do something about it but so far all they do is tell me that I will get a call soon.

Why not just back up your User data, and re-install Vista with a Vista dvd disk?

at HPs instruction I backed up my data and ran killdisc and restored from the discs they sent me and then ran sfc scannow and it still found corrupt files.

I have had more or less same problem on home build computer. Was fairly stable but some odd BSODs I blaimed just about everything for, looked at tons of memory dumps. Kept coming no matter how much I uninstalled/updated. Turned out it was memory, had 4 sticks at correct voltage/speed settings but still chipset just dont work too well unless speed is lowered 1 notch.

Sfc /scannow always turned up with corrupted files no matter screaming and yelling, yet computer was working, sort of stable. I could play a game or 2! After change/"fix" sfc /scannow is always flawless, and everything else can run for weeks. So I figure that sfc is pretty sensitive and was trying to tell me something :) More than memtest86 ever did btw. Because all seemed to be after the book I did not bother with better memory tests like Prime95. That would most likely have revealed invisible problem.

Dont know if this is even relevant since my problem is specific to a certain chipset not working well with 4 modules running at correct speed. Actually I knew that but thought I was lucky. Strange things happen. Bios updates sometimes fix problems with certain memory modules/setups as well. Have you checked? Well, if you start to see bsods or other nasties then think memory even if not obvious. I did see other signs than just sfc, but opposite them sfc was 100% consistent.

I really appreciate the input and help. my basic problem is still there. I bought a new laptop from HP and it blue screened. I restored it and scanned with sfc scannow and it revealed corrupt files. HP then recalled the laptop and when I got it back sfc scannow still revealed corrupt files. Since then it failed to boot once and I got it to boot on the 4th try using F8 and starting windows normally. There has been no noticable problem since except today I got a message "IDT PC Audio stopped working and has closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly" - this happened as the computer was starting up.
HP have done nothing. All they do is say they have referred the issue to supervisors, or technicians and given it a high priority and promise me a call within 3 days (23 days ago). I just want to know if I have a problem and do you think HP should repair it? and is there anywhere I can go to get more advice on this?

My wife bought a brand new Tashiba notebook from bestbuy, It had so much junk on it (duplicate third party programs that did the same thing that Vista did itself). I spent hours removing all the junk programs, defraging it- Afterwords, when I ran sfc scannow, it showed errors.

Most was caused by the third party/toshiba programs being removed (the registry was still full of crapware). You have to understand the O/S on a system like this is not installed from a true Vista DVD disk, but is a OEM "model" image used by them on all the systems using that operating system (i.e., Premium), usually taken off another master. Any errors on that master are copied to every system using the OEM recovery Image disk. The best way to fix this is to re-install Vista from a true Vista installation disk- there is no junkware (crapware) and the install is clean.

Now if there are hardware issues, then I would take it back and demand a refund. Do not get stuck in the "repair/warranty" catch22 on a new system. The turn around for repairs can take months, and it is a common practice to use refurbished/used parts to repair the "new" system with.

Well, this sounds like HP's problem if they are shipping that laptop out with that problem. I still think that a reinstall will fix it.

[my problem is that it is a new HP laptop and I don't want to do anything to void the warrenty, not that it is doing me any good. I can't get HP to do ado anything except promise to look into it and call me. This has been going on for over 50 days now. I think if it is a problem they should fix it if it is not they should tell me so instead they say nothing. Would you be happy with a new HP lap top that revealed corrupt files on sfc scannow even after a restore using hPs discs?

I always use the O/S disk to reinstall Windows when I buy a new system, and I will buy a OEM system builder disk (same as retail, but half the price) to re-install it with (if it doesnt include a O/S disk with the computer). I never use Recovery disks.

This computer came with XP Pro/Vista Business (upgrade). I purchased Vista Ultimate x64 OEM system Builder for $150 off Newegg.

Enter your PC model #, or "start detection"

The most important software to immediately install Is your antivirus/drivers- then go to Windows Update, and keep going back untill there are no more updates available for your system. Then install your other software.

You can dig out what files SFC is struggling with How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista but if hardware is real problem not of much use. Could be random files.

I think SFC only deal with Microsoft signed files so no matter how bad/bloated HP disc is it should still be able to do a normal sfc /scannow.

Smells like ram/hard disk/controller/motherboard - or HPs problem not yours.

The problem with OEM software/drivers is that most will include stuff that either overwrites/disables stuff like Security Center, file and backup utilities, Built-in Vista Burner/Media player, etc. these can cause Windows registery issues and thus errors. OEM's get paid alot of money by these Vendors to pre-install this junk on new systems, and they almost always cause some kind of conflict, and in some cases, the driver is even incompatable with the version of Vista it is installed on. My wife's norebook came with two running antivirus "trials", mutilple software/video/music viewers/players, 3 burning software programs, and a ton of other needless "trial" software.

Hmm, adding I understand, replacing system files not so much. Well then there should be other victims with this model or specific bundle. May be HP have a FAQ about expecting strange errors and Microsofts standard tools not to work? ;) May be DVD is corrupt itself?

Since there is no "true" Vista DVD how about enjoying a true Linux live CD? Tried Ubuntu? Now is a good opportunity. If no problems with that and perhaps some hours of Prime95 blend test show no errors, computer is less likely to have hardware errors. Free Software - GIMPS Scroll down to "Setup Instructions for New Users" All you need to do is download/unpack zip-file to whatever empty folder, select torture test under options - then "blend" test. Let it run for at least some hours, the more the better. Is about similar in function as the one build into Vista and the more popular Memtest86 but more sensitive.
