Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

hiya, and welcome!

the fact that you have a 250w PSU now does not mean you need a new 250 watts PSU!!!

In fact, I would recommend you go higher than that in any case. 450watts or 500watts is usually enough, though some would think you need more. All depends on your computer, really.
Just look at what you want to spend, and then check for a good brand (don't go for the cheapo brands... trust me on this one) and get a PSU for around what you want to spend from one of the good brands (like coolermaster... I'm sure others can tell you other good brands....)

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

Hi thanks for your answer.

I have a Packard Bell IMedia 2470 (i know what you going to say but i am going to get a new case and start my build soon)

Will a higher watt PSU mess about with things though?

Sorry am a bit of a noob to this.

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

All of the hardware components will receive the desired amperage and voltage and rest will be spare. Be sure to check on what each hardware power is required on full load and just make sure all of them accumulate with the PSU.

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

Check with Packard Bell, they should tell you what kind of PSU you need for your board since the plugs on your board may not be the same as the ones on your new PSU.

I would wait a while and build a new rig altogether but, if you must, check first as you don't want to spend money on a PSU that you can't use..

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

Ok then thanks for that. I know this probably isnt the right place to ask but:

If i were to swap all my hardware into a new case would i encounter any problems? As long as i get a compatible case i shouldnt really have a prob should i?

I have an MSI MS-7301 motherboard by the way, and dont know what case to go for. Dont want anything too flashy.

Many thanks.

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

as far as cases go..... how much do you want to spend?
and you have a uATX mobo might would be worth getting a ATX mobo with the case
not sure if that would mess up your os
but you could change all your components over but you would have to get a uATX supported case
so to your question
yes you could and i would upgrade the mobo, case, and psu

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

Ok so what your saying is if i get a uATX case then i wont have a problem, i can just swap everything over, plug it in, boot it up and away i go?

Re: Need a New PSU and some advice

One thing to be extremely careful of -- there's a 4 or 8 socket AUX CPU power connector on most motherboards.

Check what your motherboard has and ensure the PSU has the correct (or better BOTH) plug(s) for the AUX CPU power socket.

Otherwise a 300 - 450 Watt PSU should be easy enough to find even in places like PC World (as you say you are in the UK).

cheers
