Vista spinning wheel

I have been running Vista 64 Bit for almost a year. About a week ago a problem started where when i click on a desktop icon the Vista spinning wheel starts and spins constantly, locking the mouse pointer out and not allowing me to do anything.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

You could boot to safe mode and check whether the same problem occurs there.

If not, the cause is likely linked to something which only loads in normal mode (but not safe mode), and by selectively deactivating/reactivating those items you can eventually find the one responsible.

MSCONFIG and "AutoRuns" (from www.sysinternals.com) can help with that.

I have already started a clean reinstall of Vista 64 Ultimate.
I thank everyone for the help they offered.
The reinstall is taking forever. Wonder if there is a bad hardware connection between the spinning wheel issue and the slow long reinstall.
I will report back after the reinstall.

Again thanks
