Black screen after login

When I login all I get is a black screen and "my documents" is open. Basically, the OS has GONE! I can still use the computer, ctrl alt delete etc.. run tasks, just that there is no desktop or toolbars etc.

Explorer (the shell) has probably crashed. Try bringing up the Task Manager by pressing ctrl-shift-esc, then clicking File/Run and typing EXPLORER into that box.

If it restarts successfully, at least you know that's the issue. It's not a long-term fix though. Most likely the same thing will reoccur after you log on next time, so if you come back and tell us what happened someone might be able to help you further.
