Add to System Tray

You'd just need to minimise the window that you have open at the time, that will send it down to the task bar so that when you hover the mouse over the button it will show a pop up so you know what it looks like.

If that is not what you mean please re-post making your question a little clearer ;)

On the right side beside the clock there a little icons that are applications currentely running. How can I make an icon appear there that when I double click it opens a picture.... not the actual applications in the taskbar.... to the right where the clock is. That is the syetm tray.

Hello Eagle710,

If the program you are running does not have this function built-in then you will need a 3rd party tool to do this.

Here is one which may suit your needs ...

The Portable Freeware Collection - Minimize To Tray

otherwise try a google for "minimize to tray freeware" and you should find something to work the way you want :D

I wanna make an application that is never has to be run but is alaways in the system tray. When you click on it a pop up appears. When you close it it goes back to sys tray....

My Computer

The area you are talking about is called the Notification Area, any icons that are showing there are programs that start up when Windows starts.

Hovering the mouse over them will make a pop up telling you what the application is and if you click on it it will open the program up.

When you are using an application, say your Internet browser, and you click on the minimise button at the top of the window that will put the program down in the Task Bar, which is over toward the left side near the Start Orb, putting the mouse over one of these buttons will show a pop up letting you see just how the window looked when you minimised it, clicking on it will open it back up so that you can continue working.

That is the only way I know of with regards to the icons showing, sorry if it's not the way you want them to work but I don't know any other way. ;)

What you are talikng about does not exist in windows.
If you want it to you are going to have to use a third
party softwear program.

Eagle710; could you possibly mean the quick launch are of the task bar. That is the area to right of the orb. You should be able to right click any program in the programs list and a drop down menu should appear. Click add to quick launch. This will put an icon in the area next to the orb with out having the program running. Unlike in the notification area next to the clock where the programs are running in the background.
If your quick launch is not active then right click on a blank area of the task bar, click properties, then check the box marked "show quick launch". This will activate your quick launch bar. Then follow the steps above to add your icons there.

No I dont mean the Quick Launch. I mean the icons right beside the clock.
Which are programs that you already have running, this was mentioned in one of the posts.

If you right click on any of them you will usually get a pop out with a list of actions that belong to the program, like Open, Properties, Exit etc: you click on the line that will perform a certain action related to the program.

If that is still not what you want then sorry but I haven't a clue what you want and you'll have to hope someone else knows what you mean or can send you to a 3rd party tool that will.

What I want is an a simple application to seat in the Running Apps section(right beside the clock). All I want to do is add a program to the list.

My Computer

I apologize for posting what is a late reply, but in case anyone is misled by the advice on this thread, I am posting a reply. Incidentally, there are other threads in the forum that give the same advice below.

You can add any program to the notification area without any third party software.

Right click the start button, then the properties, then you will the see the notification area drop down menu. You can add any program to the notification area, and set whether it will show only when the program is running or is always visible.

I lost my Google desktop icon, and came across this thread. It was easily added using the procedure above.

mcharles, I think you're on to something, but I believe that as a prerequisite, in order for a program/app's icon to be added to the Notifications Area, it has to actually have an icon that is currently (or has ever been) displayed in the Notifications Area. In other words, you can permanently add any icon that has ever been displayed in the Notifications Area while that program/app was in use --- but if that isn't the case, there doesn't seem to be a "Browse" function that lets you add a 'never-before-displayed' program/app icon.

I've refined your instructions to add a step and make them a little easier to follow:

To Add a Program or App to the Notification Area:

Right click the Start button, select Properties, Notification Area, then click Customize. You will see 2 drop down menus, one for Current Items and one for Past Items. You can permanently display any icon from either menu by selecting "Show" for that icon.
