Vista problems

OK... I'm not liking Vista very much.

1. I have the fastest cable connection possible and I just can't move around the Internet fast. I can download in a flash but moving from site to site is sloooooow.

2. And... after a year on Vista I am now getting popups. I thought it was supposed to stop them?

I update all the time. I have Vista home edition.

You need an anti-virus, the one vista has juste isn't enought. Also look for something like adaware to remove the trojan you may have.

Vista does not have anti-virus. I would recommend Avast for anti-virus and MalwareBytes to find Trojans and malware.

eVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB video card

Use these:
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware AE
Spyware Doctor - (from the google pack)
Malwarebytes
CCleaner
Auslogics disk defrager
Auslogics registry defrager
Avg Anti-Virus or Avast Anti-Virus
Windows defender
Windows firewall

These are all free to use and download. You can get all most all of them from cnet.com/downloads. These will keep your computer running in tip top shape and you should see a big improvement when surfing the net. Depending on computer usage, this will determine how often you should run these applications. For a general rule of thumb....Heavy user...once a week, medium user....twice a month and light user....once a month.

I have Avast and it found nothing.

Congratulations!: No immediate threats were found. ()

Bass... do I need them all?

My Computer

That's up to you. The problem with only one or two programs from the mentioned list is that a one of cant find and fix everything. Some will find things the others miss and vise versa. Some will find the exact same problems. I'm sure there are others that use diffent apps to do the same thing and might have more options for those paid versions. These are all free and best of all they are free. I use them all.

Bass, I was very disappointe in Malwarebytes
... I downloaded it. Made changes to my registry and all and ran it and it claimed to find over 1000 errors (mostly Wild Tangent) but in order to clean them you have to buy the program that claimed to be free.

So much for free. Now I have to uninstall it. It is NOT free.

My Computer

It is not that much money for 1000 problems. Also, it does work for free and remove problems. Only the real time scanner costs money.

HI Barbee,

I don't know what program you are describing - but it is not malwarebytes free edition.

I wouldn't normally post a direct download link , but in this case, I will.

Click this:

Thank you for downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Download.com

This is the homepage:

Malwarebytes.org

Rt click an Run as Administrator to install it . Update and scan .

There is a paid version, but you do not have to buy it. If you update and scan manually , it will present anything it thinks is nasty and will remove it if you ask.

Hope it helps

I just googled the name and downloaded from the page. The page said free but it isn't. I'm trying the link you provided.

It's not that I'm too cheap to buy it, but that I want to try something before paying $40. If the trial removes the bugs and my computer performs better... then I will buy it.

I downloaded from the link provided... found 427 errors but surprise! It only will remove 20 of them. Therefore, I will NOT buy it since I have no idea if this is a rip off or not. The other scan found 1000... how do I know this will improve my performance? How do I know these are real. I will not buy it. I'll keep the bugs.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
What about Windows Defender? Isn't that supposed to be included in VIsta?

Hi Barbee,

Something strange going on there. I have never heard of it finding 1000 entries to remove, or of it demanding payment like that.

I use it myself.

Perhaps you had better try Superantispyware.

SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloading File

SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

If that acts strange, too, then d/l a bootable anti - nasty, like this:

http://www.free-av.com/en/products/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html

Avira burns itself to cd .

Or this:

Dr.Web LiveCD is a software product that features a standard, Dr.Web scanner

Burn it to a cd with this :

View attachment boot-cd-iso.zip

Do not format the cd - if Autoplay pops up , just close it.

Boot from the cd and scan your machine.

I dunno much about Defender, but I do know is that the "trial" versions of those types of programs try to scam you out of your money, saying you have an exaggerated amount of errors, like the 1,000 you mentioned, and will only fix a few; they're trying to make you think your computer is bugged beyond repair and promise to remove them all if you buy their full version.

I hate those kind of companies who try to "persuade" the unsuspecting consumer into buying their product to make money. It'd be better if they actually had truths in their sayings.

I apologize if I have the whole idea wrong, it's just my interpretation. :)

I just want to add to your remarks. I run TrendMicro because Comsumer Reports rated it the best. I don't know anything about such things so I took their advice. It apparently does the job and takes care of the errors. I also ran Malwarebytes. It came up with over a 1000 errors. I can not believe TrendMicro would miss that many. Is it possible that Malwarebytes is causing the errors in order to sell their product? I deleted it. Bob

There are companies that do exactly what Kazuto said.

I suspected from Barbee's post that what had been downloaded was a registry cleaner of some kind, and not Malwarebytes.

Curious to find out what was going on there, as I use Malwarebytes and have never seen that kind of behaviour.

I just ran a newly installed copy, downloaded from that link a few days ago.

It found 1 suspicious entry, which it would have removed, with no mention of payment.

From the PCWorld review :

Note that you can use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program for free to scan and disinfect your system. But if you want to enable real-time protection to stop your PC from being infected in the first place, and to schedule scans, you'll have to register it.
