Hi, i installed vista 64 ultimate with 3 gig of ram but i was told that vista 64 could run with 4 so when i installed the 4th gig or ram my pc would turn on but not boot (did not see any display) so a friend told me that it is a known issue and to fix it i needed to reinstall service pack 1 with just 2 gig then that would allow me to install the full 4....i did this and now my comp will not boot unless i have just 2 gig, it wont even boot with 3 gig like before, please could you tell me how to resolve this.

Many thanks

Are the sticks matching? Any beeps? Did you reseat them? Run memtest86 on each stick one at a time.

System One

  • CPU
pair of Intel E5430 quad core 2.66 GHz Xeons
    Motherboard
    Supermicro X7DWA-N server board
    Memory
    16GB DDR667
    Graphics Card(s)
eVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB video card
    Hard Drives
    SAS RAID
Put the computer back to 2GB to get it working.

Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic download the CD ISO and burn it. Boot with the CD and test each stick one at a time. Verify you don't need to lower the FSB to run 3 sticks. Do you have to install in dual channel mode?

what is your motherboard? and what is your ram? model numbers etc , it may simply be that there just isnt enough voltage supplied to the ram , all motherboards default to 1.8v for DDR2 however some high end stuff runs at 2.1 2.2v you may get away with it with only 2 or 3 sticks but it could be cr@pping out at 4.

you could also try downclocking your ram see if that helps.

let us know what ram it is and mob info and i can tell yuo if this could be the issue and how to do it.

that reinstall service pack 1 fix you mentioned is a valid workaround if thats your problem , but you have to reinstall Vista completely with 2 gig of ram then install service pack 1 then add the extra 2 gig

no i dont install in dual channel mod (whatever that is lol), i am pretty sure they are all working cos i have switched them all out out and booted fine with all combinations so i doubt it has anything to do with a faulty stick...if that is what you were implying...i have seen on other post of a hot fix, dont know if i need that??

Thanks for the help btw :)

Could be RAM voltage issue or a compatibility issue. Does the computer beep and not post?

the ram is it 1066mhz or 1150? they do both in that type , also if you notice the voltage........
OCZ Technology | Products | Memory | OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Reaper HPC Edition

youll see its 2.1 (the 2.3* bit just means OCZ will still warrentey the ram up to this voltage for overclocking purposes) pound to a penny your mobo is only supplying that ram with 1.8V , look at your mobo manual it will tell you in there how to up the voltage to 2.1 , and if you still have issues remember you can safely go to 2.3

Just out of interest you have installed EXACTLY the same ram , not the 1150 and 1066?

I would verify they are matching specs and what your voltage is set to.

Pull them out and inspect them. Verify it. Then, do you have the proper voltage set on your motherboard for three sticks to work?
