Black screen with mouse cursor, can't log in

I've seen a lot of posts on the internet about a black screen after a reboot. My problem is similar but it happens after I lock windows (Win->L). I get a black screen and can see/move the mouse cursor around but cannot ever get the login screen again. Crtl-Alt-Delete does nothing. I end up having to do a hard reboot. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on an ASUS p6t board. I've checked the event logs and there is nothing before the hard reboot. Any ideas?

This will happen if your partition table got corrupted. U would try these methods.

Boot from your vista cd and select repair my computer>startup repair. If still unsolved, Boot from your vista dvd repair my computer>select command prompt and type these commands,

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /RebuildBcd

Let me know the result....

Thanks, I will try this. It is intermitent and doesn't always happen when I lock the PC. But it's been happening frequently enough that I should know if it works.

I have this same problem on severl of my desktops
It appears to be related to memory usage. When I use above 2-3gb of memory, the issue appears. Rebooting clears it up again

Did you find a resolution to it yet?
