I am having problems with my burner in vista... I was using freeware software (burnaware) to burn dvd's and it was working fine the past 3 weeks... then my fiance downloaded vista updates and now the software, any of my software actually is giving me an error message that there is not supported burner detected. not really being computer savvy, what can I do to get this resolved?

I would first use System Restore to go back to a point in time before the vista updates were performed and see if that was the real cause of the problem

If not, then something has affected the DVD burner.

If yes, then I would check with the DVD burner software and see if they have a more recent update.

If that doesn't help, try ashampoo_burning_studio_6_free_675_4280.exe from downloadcom.

It has been working great on my PC with Vista updates installed.

Vista sp1 has built-in burning software, and is even able to burn to Blu-ray (BD-RE). That is all I use. The only function lacking is the ability to burn ISO, but there is a free program for that (it also works for BD disk) BURNCDCC

I suggest you remove all the burning software and let vista do it.

which vista program burns dvds? that allows me to burn from shrinked dvd's?
the device is titled as

hl-dt-st dvd+-rw gsa-t21n ata

working fine just before latest windows updates...I can't roll back any drivers... the burnaware software was working minutes before the updates downloaded...then the software started giving me "no supported recorder found"...

It is built in to the operating system. You are just installing 3rd party software to do what Vista does natively
(Or You can also try re-installing the 3rd party burning software)

below screenshot is Vista's default disk burner:
