Is vista as bad as they say?

Hi, this is my first post on this forum.
I have a Mac running OSX 10.5., 3 PC's running XP Home SP2 and XP Pro SP2 and am now contemplating a PC running Vista Home Premium 32 or 64bit....or both.
All I hear about Vista is moany moany rubbish don't touch it with a very long barge pole. Scrap it and reinstall XP Pro.
Is it really that bad or are these people from the planet winge or what??
I edit video and run some complex web sites, so I need 64bit with 12Gb of Ram and no way am I going to find that on XP. I could get it on OSX but then I would need to remortgage the house to do it, so it looks like Vista is the way to go.....or is it?
Let the sages of all things Vista, let me know if this is a good move or one I might regret!

Well my experience of it is that there are no problems.

OK it does need more power and hardware to run but if you buy a machine that is made for it I don't see why you should have problems.

I think a lot of the talk is mainly from people who try upgrading an XP machine to Vista then have problems and blame the OS.

Those are my thoughts but I'm no expert and you may get answers telling you to hang on until Windows 7 is out as that will really impress. Of course it depends on how soon you need to get another machine whether you want to wait.

I think you'll get lots of answers good and bad so in the end it will be down to you what you decide to do, but good luck what ever you decide ;)

Thanks Joan. I suspected as much.
I am looking at machine specs, but my minimum would be an intel quad core 2.33 with 8Gb of Ram running Vista 64bit. I am also considering an Intel i7 quad core 2.66 with 12Gb of Ram. I have checked my software and it is all 64 bit compliant.
One machine I looked at came with 6Gb of Ram but Win Vista Home Premium 32bit. I questioned this and the dealer told me that I had to contact Microsoft to upgrade to 64bit. Is this usual?

You seem to be a guy who can navegate well around pc seeing as to you use Mac & XP so you shouldn't have a problem with Vista x64. It is very stable, at least for Games (even if the majority are still DX9) and since I don't use it for anything else, I can't comment on it further.

My only pet peeves with it (coming from XP) is that the "Look & Feel" changes dramatically, I can't find things on it as easy as I did on XP, permissions & controls are more strict and this can be annoying at times but as time progresses, you either switch back to XP or learn to live with it or it just gets to be less and less of a hassle ;)

Besides, you hit the nail in the head... going Mac for Video Editing? How many kids do you have and how much do you think you'll get once you sell them to pay for the mac! :p :D

Hello Taffy, welcome to Vista Forums!

As you're going to have the HW to run 64-bit then go for it, just remember it'll do better with at least 8GB of RAM, as to the learning curve, you should have no problems, anything you need help with these forums have an extensive tutorials section, have a look to start off.

T I am also considering an Intel i7 quad core 2.66 with 12Gb of Ram. I have checked my software and it is all 64 bit compliant.

To get an extra year or two before an upgrade is again necessary, go for an i7 system. It's still cheaper than a similar speced Mac ;)

Unfortunately yes. However it should only cost you the price of shipping for the x64 disc.

I recently purchased a new computer with the same specs as you are thinking about (quad core 2.33, 8 gig ram upgradable to 16) with Vista Home Premium 64 bit installed. It is quite different from XP but the learning curve is very small. It works great on a fast machine. The more I use it the more I like it. I did get one of the many Vista books at a library or book store to help me along!

Vista is great if your machine can feed it's power hungry need. I run Vista 64 with AMD X4 9850, 8 gig DDR2 and EVGA 9800GT. I love the OS and it is a refreshing change from XP. The hardware you are looking to put together to run it are more than ample! Personally, I was scared to get Vista but this was totally unfounded after running it. Then again, I was scared to get XP after running Windows 98 for so long. Once again, unfounded fears. I know a lot are praising Windows 7 beta right now but I think I will stick with Vista for quite sometime because it runs great for me.

Oh, forgot, this forum site here is a God send with helping! I come here everyday and find something new that Vista can do! Any of my problems solved(only had one and a quick search of the forums resolved it in no time) The moderators are super helpful and go to any end to resolve any issues. Therefore, you are not alone if you need some help.

Vista is good OS. I use it and i have not faced any problems yet. Instead it gives more appropriate ways and techniques to use each and every feature. Its very easy to use. There are many new features which XP doesn't have. Its also not as costly as Mac OS X. But if you have so many computers, you can try your experience in all these computers and see which fits best for you.

I think it has all been said.
Vista is a stable OS now it has been out a while (the same as all os`s).
As you are buying new hardware there will be no probs.
You may want to wait for 7 to come out as it is a bit more streamlined and faster than Vista, it depends on how long you have to wait.

You do not have to contact MS for an upgrade, you can get an OEM Version from Newegg (64bit Vista Ultimate) or from any local computer store.

I would also get the Corei7 920 like you were considering, you will NOT be disappointed. Make sure you get a nice aftermarket cooler for it, as the stock intel heatsink/fan does not do a very good job IMHO.

I highly recommend the XIGMATEK Dark Knight LGA1366 Heatsink/Fan... it brought my temps down considerably...and is easily affordable, and easy to install. Especialy if you are going to build it yourself, which to save money, i suggest you do.

I built my PC, for around $2500, monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, case, and everything included....
