    Need new power supply

Well I finally did it...upgraded one too many pieces and now I need a new power supply. Actually I think mine is due to be replaced anyway (I might be seeing some instabilities). I ran a psu sizer and it recommended at least an 850 watt. Now this may work at this time but I am thinking about potential upgrades tomorrow (ROFLOL, I know me). Anyway I was wondering about recommendations for a good psu based on my system currently (See system specs).

    Currently looking at:

    1. Cooler Master Real Power Pro 1250-Watt Power Supply - SLI Ready, 80PLUC, 135mm Fan RS-C50-EMBA-D2 at TigerDirect.com
    2. Corsair CMPSU-1000HX 1000-Watt Power Supply - ATX, 140mm Fan, SATA-Ready, SLI Ready at TigerDirect.com
    3. Ultra X3 ULT40311 1000-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, PCI-E Ready, Energy Efficient, Modular at TigerDirect.com

I'm not sure about the Ultra brand which is what I am currently running as it only has a 3 year warranty which coincidentally is just how long I've had the current Ultra psu and it is starting to act up.

    bobtran,

I think the Coloer master and Corsair are both solid supplies capale of delivering their rated power and then some. I have been an Antec fan and the 450 watt Antec in my first build is coming up on 6 years old and still going strong. I just used another Antec in my new build. They are reasonably priced and conservatively rated high quality supplies.

    Re: Need new power supply

One thing to be aware of when choosing a new/replacement PSU is Will it fit in the case? The depth (front to back) of PSUs is generally 140mm, but some of the higher powered models can be 180mm or even 230mm for the highest powered units (typically those with a rating of 1000W and up). It is possible that these will fit, but you may need to be careful with the connections to the optical drive(s) and you might also need to have right-angled connectors for them. If you have spare drive bays, you might also consider moving the drives so that the connections are not interfered with.

Thanks for all your valuable assistance with this decision.

While it is true that at this time I only need about 850 Watts I also find that the limited number of connections on these PSU's will limit future upgrades. I also appreciated the input about the size of the units as that completely slipped my mind when I was researching PSU's. It's always the little things that bite you when you overlook them. Lucky for me I have a full size case with lots of room.

@ Pizzaman: As to the lifetime warrenty on the Ultra, You must have got it at the right time because it only has a 3 year limited warrenty now. I have had a number of Ultra's that have worked flawlessly over the years and for that reason almost ordered the X3 on sale for $199 but it went up to $249 yesterday.

After taking all advice into account I have decided to order the Cooler Master Real Pro 1250 (It has room to grow, a wealth of connectors, and it's SLI certifed by Nvidia for my hardware).

Now All I have to do is wait for the delivery.

This is always the l...o...n...g...e...s...t time. The closer we get to something (e.g. number of days before W7 is publically released as RC), the slower and longer the days seem to be.

Good luck with your new PSU (when it arrives) and remember to double (and triple) check all connections BEFORE you turn your system back on. It might be prudent to clean out any dust that might be lurking in your case and to check that all fans are also clean.

Thanks for the info. It wasn't posted anywhere except on their warranty web site. I guess I should have listened. Next time I will know.

For other people searching/reading this posting here is the link:

    Ultra Product Registration

    From the link:

" all Ultra Products Power Supplies and Cases now carry a three year warranty that they will be free from defects in materials or workmanship. In addition, that warranty is upgradable to a LIFETIME warranty by simply registering online. "
