Got "Test Mode" After Installing Technet Download

Just underwent a zillion reboots and finally undid this weirdness - read on.

I decided to format my second XP on partition D: and install Vista Ultimate SP2 obtained from Technet Plus where I'm a subscriber.

I installed using "Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (x86) - DVD (English)" ISO from Technet burned to a DVD and used the key I obtained there, not the "Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 2 Checked Build (x86) - DVD (English)". Actually not quite sure what "checked build" is.

It installed OK but while booting I noticed right after the initial scroll bar when the screen is normally all black for several moments, registry entries (?) in white print flashing across the top of the screen, then it booted normally, but I had "Test Mode" in all 4 corners and "Windows Vista...blah blah" in the centre top of the screen.

I thought maybe I need to activate which I did, I had entered the key during the initial install. It updated normally, some failed. I rebooted and could only boot either into that or XP. My main Vista on M: & Windows 7 on N: had vanished.

Anyway I formatted D: again, removed a few Vista boot files, re-did the EasyBCD number (in XP on C: ) and finally got my old boot menu back.

(I'm now in good old original Vista on M: ).

What was with this "Test Mode"? Plus I seemed to be unable to add M: or N: back to the EasyBCD menu during this weird period.

What it means is SP2 is integrated into Vista, and this is a RC evaluation copy only (hence watermark). You cannot upgrade install from the RC SP2 integrated Vista O/S to the final release version of Vista SP2, and must completely uninstall the eval copy at that time.

I didn't upgrade, this was a clean installation after a format. The ISO was the full "Vista with SP2", no RC or beta or any other label. That's why I'm so puzzled by the result I got.

I could be wrong, but SP2 is still in RC, and SP2 Vista download that you have is the RC eval Version.

Vista SP2 is not yet the final version for release, and it was just a couple weeks ago this RC SP2 was released for the public download.

What "checked build" means: (eval version)

Its a build that has many additional error traps in it that results in much
slower performance. Its used for developers for debugging purposes.

You didnt download the RTM SP2, you downloaded the checked build.

The RTM version for Technet is a standalone SP2 download- not the entire Vista SP2 O/S.

I've already got SP2 standalone which I used to update my existing Vista. This is a brand new installation of a complete Vista Ultimate with SP2. If you look at the pic I posted above you will see that it is NOT the checked build, I purposely avoided that download. Technet has the complete Vista with SP2, not Vista SP2, not the service pack alone. It's the complete OS including the SP2 that I downloaded.

Am I losing my mind here or is Microsoft getting their downloads juxtaposed with each other?

note- apparently the SP2 Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002.18005) (standalone) site was decommissioned on 5/15/09.

It very clearly states:

"due to Microsoft policy regarding service releases we are unable to provide Vista SP2 slipstream isos. Note: This site will be decommissioned on 05/15/2009."

What site?

a slipstreamed ISO is a SP2 clean Installation image, and Apparently only the RC SP2 images, and the "checked Build' SP2 Installation images are still available for download.

That doesn't tell me anything at all. I don't think you understand what I'm saying. That picture you have just posted is not from the Technet Plus download pages, so has nothing to do with what I am talking about.

Here's a pic of part of the Vista downloads at Technet, I highlighted the one I downloaded. You will see from that it isn't the checked build, which is situated at the top.

The second link yes, but of course that only leads anyone to the sing-in page.

Here's a pic of part of the Vista downloads at Technet, I highlighted the one I downloaded. You will see from that it isn't the checked build, which is situated at the top.

Hmmm, yet when you downloaded this you got a eval slipstreamed "test" version? or did you just download the wrong one?
installed using "Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (x86) - DVD (English)" ISO from Technet burned to a DVD and used the key I obtained there, not the "Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 2 Checked Build (x86) - DVD (English)". Actually not quite sure what "checked build" is.

Try your Micosoft Connect dashboard. Mine only shows Perpetual Onecare, maybe yours will show Vista SP2, but the download has probably been decommissioned.

I don't have a Connect sign-in & that page leads to an error, but why would Microsoft withdraw a such publicised service pack and subsequent DVD w/SP2 and not say a word about that on the Technet pages. It's splashed all over Technet, "Download SP2 now...etc. etc.". That doesn't make sense. I suspect that some external download links have been withdrawn and that's what you are seeing.

We've been discussing the SP2 downloads all over these forums for ages now and this is the first I've heard about that.
