Please suggest few good online backup options

Hi all

I am a budding photographer, and I have Windows Vista Home Basic on my pc. What would be the best way for me to secure my files, and make sure I dont lose everything if my computer crashes? I have about 50 gb of data, and few video clippings also. My data mainly consists of my precious photographs that I clicked all thoroughout.

I was thinking about online backup. Will that be reliable? Please suggest few good options.

Mozy and carbonite are good in this. Not sure about other new entrants in this. Many new companies are entering in online backup market. Need to study them also for some additional features. Has anyone heard about any new online backup service?

Personally, I don't trust online backup. Any site can be hacked IMO. I use an external HDD to backup my files. You can disconnect it when not in use to save on power consumption if you like. Newegg.com has many that will pay for themselves by the second year of 'dues' for the online service. Also if you have an internet connection that restricts uploading (as I do) uploading that amount of info is going to take days or weeks.

Microsoft has a free online storage called Windows Live SkyDrive. You need to apply for a Windows Live ID account (free) to access it. Here is the link:

I have a external HD that I use for photo backups that works well. This would be the way to go for now unless you need the convenience of accessing your data from somewhere else. If you do choose to store and retrieve your data online, I would carefully research the sites that provide the service before you take the plunge. Hope this helps.

Having been a customer of both these at one time, I would not reccomend either of them. The biggest issue is that if the file does not change, in 30 days it will drop off their backup. so lets say in 33 days your hd crashes and you need a restore...well you are SOL if the file has not changed in 30 days and a fresh backup taken.

I was in the situation with my wife's thesis for her PHD. Some of her files would not change for MONTHS. What I am doing may be overkill for you but I am useing windows home server to back up my home network, and then backup that to Iron Mountian Online. Aneother option is some of the quick external HD's to backup to. Again, I would NOT reccomend MOZY or Carbonite.

If your backup gets dropped after 30 days, then there surely must be some other solutions that do not drop the user data automatically. Has anybody done any such analysis?
