Solved Inconsistent Picture Preview Behavior

Just copied some new jpgs from my card reader to a folder full of jpgs from the same card, same camera, same card reader - and they show up as the Photoshop icon instead of picture preview. ALL other pictures in the folder show the picture preview. The card reader folder shows the pictures too! Opened a picture and edited it in Photoshop then saved it as a jpg with a new name - and IT doesn't show the picture preview.

I cleared the thumbnail cache - no joy. Maddening!

Running 64 bit Vista on a Pemium HDX HP laptop. I apologize if this has been covered in here somewhere before but I couldn't find anything (other than clearing the thumbnail cache, but that was a bust).

Addendum - when opening the folder for the first time after a reboot, the picture previews flash for a nanosecond then revert to the Photoshop icon.

Hello Airportkid, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Double check to see if you have Windows Photo Gallery set as the default program with all of it's associations (ex: .jpg) set to it as well.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The default program is Photoshop - and the picture preview works just fine for every jpg on the system EXCEPT new ones as of a few days ago. It behaves as if some switch was thrown such that NEW jpgs only show the Photoshop icon - existing jpgs still show the picture preview. VERY irritating, this possibility that there's some hidden switch in VISTA that is causing this and nowhere can I find what that switch is or how I managed to trip it or how to reset it.

Thanks very much for your suggestion but it doesn't work (I already tried it), and anyway it is impractical for me to make a program I'll never use the default for all my graphics files, no matter how badly Bill Gates wants me to pay him. There's something else at work here.

Set Windows Photo Gallery as the default programme then delete the thumbnail cache by following this guide: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/73720-thumbnail-cache.html

Then reboot and go back into that folder. This will cause Vista to reload the thumbnails. Once its completed doing that then change the default programme to whatever you want.

EDIT: if that doesnt work then you could try doing this ( Iv never done this as my files show correctly so dont know what errors you may get)

  1. Open a photo in photoshop
  2. Got to File then Browse in Bridge
  3. in bridge go to Edit then Preferences
  4. Click Cache and then Purge Cache
  5. then click OK
  6. Reboot your pc
