Ram Usage

i have just recently bought a new laptop, i have not messed with computers much since vista has come out so i am not that familiar with it, i have a hp pavillion t-6400 4 gig ram and 350 gig hd running vista 64, my question is what would be the normal ram usage for this setup

It depends on what applications you use and how many at the same time. The average RAM usage should be up to 2GB I guess. ;)

That looks pretty normal to me. Vista has a feature called Superfetch that will automatically preload your RAM with data that it thinks you will need next in an attempt to help speed up running of your applications and proceses in Vista. It will learn your habbits and adjust as needed on what to preload. If the data was not needed, then it will automatically dump it to add something else as needed.

As the saying goes "Unused memory is wasted memory".

As brink mentioned, that is normal usage with 4GB. Especially with 82 processes running.

is 82 processes alot, also i have noticed that for some unknown reason my harddrive seems to be disappearing, and i have not installed any games or what not just vista updates and some music and photos (probably not more that 5 gigs). i ran disk defrag and as it ran it seemed to eat harddrive, i am just confused

82 is a few more than normal usage, but it also depends on what all you have open and running to at the time.

Eating your hard drive, dissappearing ??, may be System Restore storing restore points and reducing your free space. Check with this tutorial to make sure that only your C: drive is selected to store retore points on. Next, you can use this tutorial to adjust how much max space you want allowed to be used for system restore points.
