How to remove recognize/remove items under "Services" tag in SYSTEM CONFIG window?

After numerous attempts to speed up my VAIO laptop (cleanup, defrag, add 2 extra gig of RAM, removing unwanted start-ups, etc) it's still incredibly slow in all situations. I notice in MSCONFIG under the "SERVICES" tab (not the Startup tab) there are 120 items listed, 82 of which are shown as "Running."

Where can I find a list (preferably free) that shows me which of those running items are unnecessary.

I'm a good enough writer but a pitifully poor techie, so a simple explanation would be welcome.

The vista section for services is in the popular content section on the main page

Also here ...

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Service Configurations by Black Viper

if you read through the page ther is a list at the bottom of the page listing all the services Their purpose, their default state, and a recommendation for speeding up the system. The list also contains links to more detailed descriptions of the services which will allow you to decide if you actually use the functions provided and thus if you can switch it off
