first post for me here , need help solving a problem . just recently upgraded my system , dell precision 690 work station 64 bit . was working on xp 64 pro now on vista ultimate . works great with a coupl of quirkes , one which is very annoying , i have a maxtor external hard drive 1TB which i cant seem to delete files from , keep getting the error message 0x80070571 disk structure is corrupted and unreadable . dosnt seem to be as i can copy files to computer HD and edit to my hearts content . i would like to be able to delte many unwanted files from the maxtor and think this is a permissions problem . working thru my computor and going into the maxtor HD properties i seem to have all the permissions i need but when i then go into the maxtor HD and highlight a folder and check out the security permissions in properties the options are grayed out and unchangable .
thanking you in anticipation of a positive response

Welcome to Vista Forums!

I think it's not a permission problem, the error talks about corruption.
I suggest you to backup the data on your esternal hard drive and format it in "Disc management".

G'Day mulmike and bon giorno CyberZeus,

The problem of Error message 0x80070571 first appeared when I tried to do a scheduled back-up to the Maxtor HD, and showed like this;
Maxtor Backup Failure.JPG
I then tried delete a Folder from the M:\ drive, and got the following Error message;
Maxtor Delete Error Snip.JPG
With that, I thought that I would try and work within the M:\ drive by creating a new Folder, then merging all the unwanted Files and Folders into it, and then deleting that. No go. In trying to create a new Folder, up came;
Maxtor New Folder Error.JPG

I've just spent days trying to find a fix for this error......without success. Today, I resolved the issue by downloading all the Folders and Files that I wanted to keep to other Drives, [Hard Drives and Flash Drives], and to be certain, then Formatted the Maxtor HD [M; \ drive], including all retained Backup Files, TWICE!!

A new system backup went through like a breeze.......but my fingers are still crossed!!

......that's why the crossed fingers, and lighted joss-sticks. I ran chkdsk on the Drive, but it came up with nothing. From what I've read, there seems to be some issue with Windows Registry/Maxtor HD, but nobody seems to have found the bug.
