why oh why is it so slow

Hiya all. My first post.
I have a Toshiba notebook that has Vista Home Premium 32 bit oem os installed. The last couple of weeks it has been taking longer to get to the "user id" password page.

The startup jingle plays, then it idles with "please wait" for over 60 seconds before offering the chance to sign in.

Any suggestions?

Try defraging the HDD, could also check for spyware, malware, adware.

also check to see what is starting up.

is your virus scanning software making it take so long to boot.

Ok, I have just run several malware detection programs as per a guide at major geeks. Mad no difference.

I have removed a few items from my start up menu, made no noticable difference.

I setup the "bootup time log" from this forum and am getting a reboot time of 230 seconds!!

I will now try the defrag, although I forgot to mention that this notebook is only a few months old.
