External Hard Drive ?

Hi everyone,
I have an HP laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and I have two external usb hard drives; one to store everything (my files, videos, etc.) and I use the other one for virtual machines (although virtual machines are a bit slower because of the usb speed, but I'm really worried not to harm my laptop's hard disk)

1. The question I had is that: should I connect these hard drives all the time or I can unplug them if I do not intend to use them, especially the one used for virtual machines because it is used occasionally?

2. And another concern that I have is that when I have both hard drives connected and I start my computer up, it takes much longer time for my system to boot up and sometimes even my computer hangs when starting up when both hard drives are connected.

3. And for the last couple of days, something funny happens every now and then, when I'm working with my computer and I'm not using the hard drives but they are connected, I receive an autoplay message as I just connected my hard drive but it is already connected (this only happens for the one used for virtual machines and not the other one), any ideas?

4. And one last question (sorry for being too talkative!!!!!): do I really need to STOP a hard drive before unplugging it? Even if I have closed all the programs that were working with it? Because sometimes, when I have closed all the programs and I try to stop the device, it can't be stopped, but when I wait, say about 15-20 minutes, I can stop it.

Sorry for tooooo many questions, but I look forward to receiving your comments and guidance as always.
Thanks ...

Hi and welcome to Vista Forums!

1) You can unplug hard drive you don't use
2) Perform a ScanDisk on both hard drives
3) Same as 2)
4) You really need to STOP USB drives, because Vista can write data with delay.

Hi and thank you for your answer, but it happens so many times that when I want to stop the device, Windows won't let me do it and I have to wait a loooong time to be able to stop it, any suggestions?

If you don't use the 'safely remove' thing, you can wind up crashing the external drive. The wait is worth it for keeping your data.
