Partition problem !!

Hello friends,

i needed a help from u.. Pls see the pic below..

As u can see the 1.4gb space is marked as unallocated. Sine this partition does not fall to the right of my primary hdd the diskmgmt.msc cannot be used by any means.

Also when i tried using prargon partition manager it tld that it'll extend after the reboot is done but after the reboot it still remains the same. Also the same problem was encountered with eseaus partition manager.

How that partition ended up there is bcos it was an eisa logical partition and wat i did was delete it and den format it to see if there was any change.. But till now everything looks fine.

Could u pls guide me through as to wat might be the problem??
Also could u pls suggest me any other partition manager s/w which could solve this problem.

Thank you for looking into my problem,

There might also be a posibility that windows has deemed that space to have bad sectors and have made it unusable even if you try and extend your partition. The GUI may show it being done but the actual disk partitions wont change.

In your BIOS do a disk test that might take over an hour, or do the quick test that takes like 15 minutes. If the test comes up FAIL then you have a bad sectors in that part of your drive.

Do this test and let us know what happens.

You might want to try a shareware tool called Boot-It NG:
Boot-It NG is a shareware partition management utility that can be used to manage the shrinking and extending of partitions better than Vista's built-in tool. It has an old DOS style interface, but it works well. You can download a fully functional trial version here:
Boot Manager, Partition Manager, and Drive Image Utility - BootIt Next Generation
I downloaded the free trial version and burned it to a CD with the included program MakeDisk.exe in order to be able to move some unallocated space immediately behind one of my four partitions that I wanted to extend. I just booted from the CD, clicked Cancel when it asked whether I wanted to install the program on the hard drive, then clicked on the menu choice for "Partition Work", and then used the "partition slide" concept to move the unallocated space. The TerabyteUnlimited site has a good deal of documentation, tutorials, answers to FAQs, videos, etc. for how to use the program:
TeraByte Unlimited :: Support :: BootIt Next Generation
A good overall article about the various things you can do with Boot-It NG, together with some screenshots, can be found here:

I use Acronis Disk Director and have never had problems with partitions so you may want to try it.

Heres how i use it:

  1. Defrag both my partitions fully with PerfectDisk
  2. Launch Acronis Disk Director and choose Automatic mode
  3. Click Increase Free Space on the left hand side
  4. Click on D: drive as i wanted to make it bigger and then clicked Next
  5. Click on C: drive then click Next
  6. In the box that then appears i typed in the size i wanted D: drive to be (or you can use the slider) and then clicked Next
  7. Then click on Finish and it will take you back to the start page where there is a checkered flag. Click on it to confirm the changes and your system will reboot and begin the process of changing the partition sizes.

Hi,

Oem's often use non standard partitioning - they often have their own instructions how to remove them.

There may be a setting in the Bios preventing that space being altered - worth checking the manufacturer website.

Otherwise, using Diskpart to remove a non standard partition :

( you may need to use Paragon to see if it can undelete that partition first - rt click unallocated space, select Undelete, click the advanced options box - it's called something like that - and only search for the likely filesystems , ntfs or Fat32- the general search isn't always very successful)

Open an elevated cmd prompt, type: ( press enter after each command)

Diskpart

Rescan

lis disk

sel disk 0

lis par

sel par x

del par override

exi

Replace x with the number of the partition you wish to delete.
