Hayley

New Member
Help me someone please, ive been having some problems with a second hand computor i got (as anyone hu has seen my old topics in the last few days will know). Ive finally got vista home prem to reinstall but during the completely installation process the monitor goes black and displays a little blue box saying:

out of range
vga: 1024x768
h. sync: +68.8khz
v. sync: +85.1hz
clock: 184.0 mhz

What is this and why is it happening? and more importantly what can i do to fix it?
ive tried upplugging and plugging back in the monitor. I dont have another monitor i can easily get at the minute either.

I wouldnt be so bothered and id just deal with this in the morning but im in the middle of vista installation (somthin ive been tryin to do for the last week with no sucess untill now!).

Thanks

Hello Hayley,
The problem is that your monitor is not compatable with your computer, here's what you need to try, i dont know how much you know about PC's so i will assume you are a beginner, (sorry if your not),

Start your computer and while it is booting up (starting) press F8 (top row on keyboard) every secound or so.
You will come to a screen like this or something like it,

BOOT OPTIONS.png

Use the up/down arrows on your keyboard to highlight the "enable low resolution video (640x480)" option and press enter.
Good luck and post your result.

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

Im not a complete beginner (although im not an expert either hence the reason i need help). And yeah that would be what i would try if it wasnt for the fact that im currently in the middle of reinstalling vista so restarting the computor isnt an option cos i dont have a full OS installed atm. Thats why i have a problem.

The monitor was working fine to begin with, then half way through the installation process the monitor came up witht hat message

is it an lcd monitor? your problem seems to be the v sync set at 85hz , its most likely too high

how is the monitor plugged in are you using a VGA cable or didital?

Hi Hayley,

What is the make and model number of your monitor? Your problem could be caused by a number of things. Firstly, use the controls on the monitor itself to reset it back to its factory defaults. Secondly, the monitor cable itself could be defective. Thirdly, it also be your graphic card misreporting itself and therefore causing incorrect drivers to be installed. A bit more information about the system would be useful.

Ive tried another monitor (another lcd flat screen), and this one says "signal out of range".

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

This would appear to be pointing to a problem with either your monitor cable (if you used the same one) or possibly a problem with your graphics card. If your system also has on-board graphics, try removing the card and connecting your monitor upto that instead.

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

I didnt use the same garphics card with both monitors (as th second one i tried has a monitor cable bulid in).
As for connecting the monitor on board graphics i dont kno how, the only monitor socket on the back is the one im using (which goes into the graphics card). There is another similar scoket further up, but the pins stick out of that one and are not inverted....

My Computer

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

I guess that would eliminate the monitors and monitor cables. The socket you are describing, with the pins sticking out, is for serial devices such as old keyboards and mice. Such devices are generally not used or even available these days, so it is safe to ignore that socket. The socket for the monitor is usually coloured blue, and if it is on-board it will be in the same orientation as the serial socket. The same socket on a graphics card will be rotated 90 degrees.

Try booting the system up, and when you see the message describing the graphics card, press the Pause key on the keyboard to freeze the display. What does the message say? This should give information relating to the type of graphics card installed.

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

several problems with that, the computor is still in the vista installtion process (well its prob finished bynow but i cnt be certain cos the screen went off before the installtion process was complete) so i have no idea what rebooting it would do to the setup.

Secondly i cant see anything on screen both monitors display the message so its not possible for me to see anything

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

I would say that you should be able to reboot, especially if the screen has been off for some considerable time. During installation, the screen might, but not necessarily, go blank whilst the actual built-in Vista graphics driver is being installed, but should come back on automatically within 5 to 10 seconds. Another possibility is that the driver file is corrupted, possibly because the Vista DVD needs cleaning, although, if this is the case, I am not sure why the file corruption wasn't picked up during the file transfer section of the installation. It's still worth a try, though.

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

I'll try rebooting, but im not sure what good it will do me wen i cant see anything. As for file curruption that could be a possiblity but i didnt install from a dvd, as the dvd wasnt working, i installed using an iso file and a flash drive.

re: Help! Monitor saying "out of range" in the middle of windows vista instalation!

Ive tried rebooting, when i do i get the following option up boot with safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with comand prompt and start windows normally.

I first selected start windows normally to which the out of ragne message comes back. Next i tried to boot to safe mode, as soon as it booted up in safe mode, it came up with a message that says windows installation is unable to complete in safe mode please restart windows normally. I then clicked ok and it restarted windows (and i got the out of range message again).
