a challenge for sharpshooters

:pIm new to the forum, so "hi". Hello....nice forum, very slick.

my challenge is to solve this slimy bsod: error 0x0000007b (it swoops in right when vista is telling me the version of os --after drivers are loaded). I have done a few things, like using vista boot cd to try bootrec.exe (and all it's commands), searching for winload.exe (which hasn't been modified since 2008 by the time stamp), I've done chkdsk /f, and maybe a few other things which right now I can't remember....so
If you dare try your hand at the mutant, ooze-breathing bsod I commend you brave one, but I warn you...yes..... I think it's a doozie.

My Computer

Try a Memory diagnostic
Try chkdsk /r

More details on exactly where the BSOD occurs - how do you know it's after the drivers are loaded? And after which set of drivers (boot start, system start, user start, etc)?

Here's a brief description of the error message: Troubleshooting Windows STOP Messages
This seems to refer to bad storage drivers, bad file system, or a bad hard drive.
To check this:
- update the storage drivers on the system (if you can get into Windows to do it). If not, use System Restore from within Startup Repair to set the system back to when it was working properly.
- run Startup Repair - it'll fix the MBR and boot sector on the disks, along with running CHKDSK /R
- run a bootable hard drive diagnostic: Bootable Hard Drive Diagnostics - Vox

thanks, other forums aren't as fast.

Well I'm running ubuntu so the hdd works, I ran chkdsk /f once so far (I'll try it again later), I know the drivers are loaded because I have it on boot information option instead of splash (it gets to the part giving os info like build and how much ram is in, etc).

I have the vista boot cd (neosmart) and startup repair doesn't work, I run bootrec /rebuildbcd and it comes back "no windows installation found".

Last time I could boot vista I ran avast scan. It may be avast (it said c:\pagefile.sys was a trojan and then it renamed and moved it, also it wanted to do a boot up scan next boot, and I agreed --something in the startup registry maybe) then agian safe mode is toast also:party: (bsod on that says x00000007, just a seven at the end).

I also messed with the services at around that time last, how could I just restart all services from a non bootable state? would that help if even safe mode is not working?......

btw the first time I got the bsod it did say "device inaccesible.." (or whatever that says, can't remember verbaitm), but now the bsod is just states the number saying to check for drivers, viruses and to run chkdsk, no more "device inaccessible..."

Ok sherlocks and matlocks and macgruber's, your move:shock:

Btw, Im using ubuntu on the same laptop, what tools can I just use while Im on ubuntu to try and diagnose/treat this? I mean like chkdsk from terminal or something.

:geek: all help is very appreciated.

I'll give all the above a try, Im close to restoring the image........ oh, and I just thought: how would I restart the services from cmd prompt, or even ubuntu? I did mess with the services the last time I could boot to vista.

you can type in msconfig from the command prompt, this has services attached to it and also gives you more flexability with the boot.

....ok, I'm ok. after a good cry, nothing like a good troubleshoot.

so I'll try all these suggestions, but now I have to write all the services down and get organized.

Why doesn't anyone come up with a boot cd that, you ready?....has a program that just starts all services indiscriminately (all necessary os services). That could help cut down that step. But here I go, one by one.

yay...
