HP LaserJet 3020 problems with Vista HP

Help. I have just set up my new Dell computer with Vista HP loaded (32 bit). I have an HP laserJet 3020 which I can print to, but I cannot load the software that came with it and I cannot scan from it.

If I try loading the disc it hangs when it gets to the part "searching fro new hardware".

When I check from the control panel for scanners and cameras it is listed as a scanner, but, it still says cannot locate scanner if I try to import using Windows
Photo Gallery. I understand this is where the scanner & camera wizard is hidden.

I have searched for others with sinmilar problems but found no solution. What can I do. Please reply in simple language as I am relitively experienced using my computer, but rather less so when it gets to the technical language. Assume I'm an idiot and we should do OK.

Thank you. Although I have not yet installed the software I have found a work around for scanning by downloading an update from Microsoft, deleting and reinstalling the printer and using Windows Photo Gallery. I still cannot install the software because if I do the drivers in it overide the update and put me back to square one - a catch 22 - so I am giving up on that. I can at least scan now.
