Solved 32bit to 64bit

Hi, iv just ordered parts online for my dads pc and picked amongst other things for him these two items:

  • TW3X4G1600C9D - 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 Dominator DDR3, 1600 Mhz
  • 512 mb Sapphire HD4650
He doesnt game so the graphics card is just purely to give him a picture on screen but this is going to give him 4.5gigs of RAM. He's only got Vista Ultimate 32bit retail while i have a Vista Ultimate 64bit OEM disk. So is it possible to send him my 64 bit disk and for him to install the 64bit version with his code so he can access all the ram hes going to have.

Hello Stew,

If you had a retail Vista installation disk, then yes without a problem. However, it depends on what type of OEM installation disk you have. If it is a OEM Vista Recovery disc, then it will not work. If it is an express installation disc, then you might be able to.

64-bit media should have been included in the box with the retail Windows Vista Ultimate though. You can also order a replacement 64-bit from here as well for just S&H.

I have the vista ultimate 64 bit upgrade disk that i use for clean installs. Iv never installed a 32bit Vista and asking my dad about technology is tough going lol. Il give him a phone though and ask him to look in the dvd case and see if there is 2 disks.

you need to make sure that the hardware is 64-bit compatible. I didnt look at your system specs but that is a key issue. How is he going to have 4.5GB of RAM with only 2x2GB RAM chips? If you OEM disk is from like HP for example, it cant be used on another pc unless it is hacked, but that isnt a good thing to do.

You're welcome Stew.

As Blackhawk suggested though, I would verify that there are 64-bit drivers available for all of his devices, and that he has a 64-bit CPU first though.

Cheers guys, all his components will work together. This is what i picked for him:

  • TW3X4G1600C9D - 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 Dominator DDR3, 1600 Mhz

  • Core2Quad q9550
His 4.5 gigs of RAM comes from having 4 gigs of RAM plus the 0.5 gigs on the graphics card. Its just an upgrade as hes keeping the case, power supply, dvd drive etc he uses. Iv already downloaded all the 64 bit drivers for him and then started to download the service packs, DirectX, .NET etc and then thought will this actually work lol.

Iv just got off the phone and he tells me his disk is actualy the vista ultimate 32 bit OEM that he bought online. So it would have to be installed using a vista ultimate 64 bit OEM upgrade disk and then using his 32 bit OEM code.

That's good news. :)

However, RAM on a graphics card is treated and used separately than system RAM. He would have 4 GB of RAM and 512 MB of graphics memory to be technical. ;)

Yeah i know that lol. It was just the 32bit limitations of accessing the RAM that i was worried about. Id basically advised him to get the above then realised that a 32 bit OS can only access around 3 gigs ish of RAM.

To my knowledge the graphics cards 512mb would be included in that 3 gigs of ram. Meaning he was missing out on using 1.5 gigs of "real" ram :p. But anyway why cant microsoft sell one version instead of 12 so that it stops stupid questions like mine.

But thanks everyone for the help and putting my mind at rest. He will install as i originally planned and hopefully everything will go OK.
