In XP os you can click on Start & enter %temp% in "run" and clear all temporary files, since there is not a "run" feature in Vista how can I accomplish the same thing? Very inexperienced

Hello awlmyne,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

You could also use the win+R keyboard shortcut to bring up the run dialog box or you could right click the start button/properties, customize button and check the Run command box. That will put a button on the start menu for the run command.

Hope this helps.

Gary

Edit: To clear the files hit Ctrl+A (select all) and hit delete.

Everything I have been told & read from the "experts" says to NEVER open file extensions w/ vbs, shs or pif extensions; that's where the viruses etc. are attached.

Hello awlmyne,

True, but you could always scan them for viruses. I just did with Avast and it found nothing. Also, you could just relax and wait a few days as someone is bound to try them out, I will as soon as I get a minute, and if anything goes wrong, you can bet there'll be a post here about it.

Seeing a Pacinitaly has been around a while and the DeleteTempFiles.vbs was posted elsewhere with no complaints, ......

Your welcome. These forums are well moderated unlike some. I've found things that don't work for me, but never a virus or malware. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but the post wouldn't last long. I have tried out the clean after me app. Seems to work as intended. :)

I guess my "very inexperienced" comment was too subtle so... I don't know how to scan links for viruses much less do anything else, but I clicked on 1st one (clean after me) to see if there was an option for scanning for virus. Before I could my Norton box popped up w/ " Suspicious.MH690.A detected by Auto Protect & removed." I asked earlier & will try again - Is there something I can get, read etc. to try and answer my questions or help me through this electronic jungle? FYI - As I am writing this I got your reply to trying "clean after me" not being a problem for you. So now I am definitely at a loss.!!!

Sounds like you have Norton Anti Virus installed and that it is coming up with a false positive for a virus in the file. All anti virus software can come up with a false positive. I generally don't use any file that gets a hit from AV software. If it's something I really want to use, I'll do more checking to make sure it is a virus or not. When you clicked on the file in the forum did you select run or save? You may have to turn off norton in order to run this app. If this makes you nervous, you could try CCleaner. Link here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/86472-latest-ccleaner-version-released.html CCleaner also has a registry cleaner in it. I'm not much for registry cleaners so use that bit at your own risk.

If you are brand new to computers, I would suggest a book or two for beginners. I always liked the 'Dummies' books, but there are plenty of others. Also check out the tutorials section of this site. Lots of tips tricks and fixes in there.

Hope this is helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions. That's how we all got started.
