PC Cool Down Tips

Hello Windows Vista Forums,

It's turning summer now and your PC proficiency may be affected by it. Here are a couple of Cool Down tips to help keep your PC cool:

1. Clean the vents out. Wipe off all the dust on the PC vents to increase air circulation. Thus, giving the PC more breathing room.

2. Open up the box and give the inside a good clean out. Take all the hardware out, (if you can) and give the inside a good compressed air cleaning. Get out all the dust and whatever else might be in their. Be careful re-installing the hardware and components.

3. Take your time when reasembling. This is a very crucial step!
When assembling take the time to re-organize your wiring to improve air flow. Tuck away unsused PSupply cables. Use some elctrical tape or plastic ties to pick up loose and dangling cables. If your using IDE 40/80 pin cables try to fold them neatly. (There are pre-folded IDE cables for sale) Do this and your system will look better and further more will stay cooler by improving air flow!

4. Check your fans, make sure that they all work properly! Including the one inside the Power Supply. (If this fan is not working is time to get a new power supply unit, DO NOT attemp to replace this fan!!!! Nor open the Power Supply!!! This may very well result in DEATH!!! As you know high voltage residual charges is left in the units even when unplugged!!!

5. Invest a few dollars in some good fans if you are not satisfied with your temperatures. I replaced every stock fan from my system to higher quality fans including video card fans. There is total decrease of 19 degrees F in idle and a 31 degrees F while playing games!

6. Clean the CPU's fans. Clean off all the older thermal grease and apply a new coat of high quality thermal compound. Your PC will recieve a way better heat transfer!

Here is some extra things you can do to cool down your PC:

1. Transport your PC to an air-conditioned room!

2. Invest water/ice based cooling, it is suppost to work wonders!

3. Their is a new component now that acts like an internal air-conditioning system for your PC. It's very pricey... around $1000-$1300.

Hope this helps cool your rigs down!

My Best Regards,
alienware09

Perhaps you could offer your suggestions for the best CPU coolers

:)

Are you sure you didn't have complete failure in one of your fans when you managed to lower the temp 19F by case fans alone? I wouldn't think Alienware would stock their cases with crappy fans considering they portray themselves as a premium PC builder.

Hello truthkid,

I am absolutely positive that their was no failure! Alienware is mistaken a lot though. They build quality PC's their is no doubt. There is a catch though... to get a quality PC from them you need to have the money. I can agree that they are overpriced though.:) That much is certain!

Some good CPU coolers would be the:

Noctua NH-U12P x 1x120mm fan, 6x120mm case fans

Xigmatek HDT-S1283 CPU Cooler

These are some I could think of off the top of my head.
Hope this is useful!

The Zalman 9700 is also a good CPU cooler. I just installed it on my new machine with Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound and it keeps my Q9550 pretty darn cool. I can post a temp when I get home if someone would like me to do so.

Nice post,

a couple of extra things to note.

1. Placement of the tower, dont leave it on the window ledge. When the sun shines through the window it will cook your PC. (Yes some people do place it there).

2. Dont leave it on the floor. This will clog your computer up in no time and if you have a front fan that takes its airflow from under the case you will restrict the airflow.

Yeah I got the Zalman 9700 in my tower at home, the thing is a beast. I knew it was big but didn't expect it to be that huge when I got it.

Besides cleaning the computer, making sure fans aren't blocked, I find having an air-conditioner running helps cool the computer and myself as well.

A hot room wont cool the computer off.

Doesn't that cooler rack up a noise of 35db

Whereas this thing is dirt cheap and is dead quite at 19db and does the job as good as the ultimate air coolers(Sssshhhh)

It can be noisey. Especially if you turn the fan up all the way, but it does have a variable speed controller that you can physically adjust yourself. The only time I actually max it out is when I want to see how low I can get my temps while the cpu is under high loads. Other than that I keep it pretty low and it does an awesome job, and you can hardly hear it (especially with an Antec 1200 case ;)).

Im sur if you can afford something as expensive as this and don't mind looking at a super ugly case then this is the cooling solution for you :p
although i suppose if the looks of that case puts you off and you don't mind hacking up you beloved case all in aid of super cooling you could go for the refrigerated ad-on mod

Overpriced by £300. Try and find a Refridgerator specialist and offer him £250 he'd jump at the chance...
