If you mean having both screens enabled? Well, for some reason, it's not automatic. You have to enable it yourself. Just go the the advanced settings tab in the customizing window. Here, I have attached a screen and put a red rectangle to show which checkbox to check so that it comes on the secondary monitor as well. Just click extend the desktop and it will work.

As for putting different backgrounds on different monitors, I don't know how to do it directly in Vista, so I use a program called Display Fusion, which I find pretty good, and you don't need to run it everytime the computer is on to keep the different wallpapers.

Strange I thought I replied to this...

If you mean multiple desktops like dual monitor, the solution above it where to go. As far as multiple desktops, you could try third party apps or you could simply open your desktop for monitor 1 and expand the canvas and paste picture 2 in there. Set the wallpaper to center and there you have your dual monitor wallpaper.

If you want virtual desktops, I'm not sure what's taking Windows so long to realize that other OSes have been using this for quite some time and people love it. There are third party apps that can do virtual desktops.
