Please forgive me if this has been asked and answered :D
Also not too good with technical things (typical woman I know)
I'm using Vista home premium and when using my computer if regularly stops responding and the screen fades can't do anything until it 'wakes' would anyone be able to tell me what the problem could be ?

Thanks

My Computer

as in fade, do you mean it gets a white shade across the screen?

if so I got the same, well had. It happened to me because too many things running at once. How much RAM do you have?

Try msconfig to disable a few things.

click on start (orb) type msconfig>hit enter>goto start up>choose what you want to start. it really doesn't matter. apply, restart. altogether i could be wrong. i hope not. good luck.

Antihiatus and JMH thanks to both of you for the replies. Have read the 'how to ask for help thread' probably should have done that first
Ok, my computer knowledge is pretty basic but I can get by. Looked in control panel - AMD Athlon64x2 duel core processor and 2gb Ram, not sure if you would need any other info. I am tracing my family tree, so usually have open my family tree programme plus a couple of internet sites and tend to switch between them. The screen gets a 'white shade' across it and seems to freeze. The banner at the very top of the screen says thats its not responding. It stays that way for a couple of minutes then goes back to normal. While its in its 'frozen' state I can't shut it down, move to another page, pretty frustrating really. Have run virus/spyware checks all ok.
Thank you for any help you may be able to give

My 1st advice Floss is if you have not already then you should download and install spybot search and destroy, once done update and immunize then run a scan, once that is complete to to mode and select advanced mode, in tools bottom left find startup in there you will find all listed startup items, most will have a desription on the right hand side as you hilight each startup, read carfully their descriptions and decid which startup items are most importand to you and then uncheck all the startup items that you feel you do not need, next time you reboot you should find that your system will start faster and that you every day use will respond better, It is recomended that you scan and umunize regular to keep you pc running good

If it says you need admin priv's then right click the destop shortcut and select5 run as administator....... good luck

Hi Floss,
A few questions for you -
Do you get the same "glitch" when working offline.
Is the "glitch" generally associated with "The Family Tree" program online?
What security progs are you running?
Did your computer come preloaded with an Anti Virus Prog?

Hi again
Firstly have a malware programme that I run regularly and also have a virgin anti-virus.
Its very rare that I'm on the computer without being on the internet but the problem only seems to arise when I'm online -co-incidently had no problem yesterday ! - also use wireless router
Happens when I'm not on my family tree programme as well.
Do you think I should download spybot instead of the malware programme I have ?

Thanks again for any advice

Hifloss,
You forgot to say if your computer came preinstalled with a different anti virus prog to the one listed above.
What malware prog are you currently using?

I recommend the following anti malware progs. Both have a free version.
SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes.org

I futher suggest that there are better free anti virus progs available than the one you are using.

HI JMH

Only came with a trial antivirus, had previously used the virgin antivirus with no problems, do you think I should use another one ? Already have Malwarebytes.org.

Thanks again

Hi Floss,
What was that original trial anti virus called & how did you remove it?
IMHO There are far better [free] Anti Virus Progs than the one you are currently running.
BTW How is your computer behaving?

Sorry for not replying sooner have been away on holiday :)
Computer came with Norton trial, removed it via uninstall hardware when trial ended and now use Virgin own anti-virus.
Still having problems with fading and programme not responding, somedays it only happens once others days seems like its happening all the time.

JMH

Thankyou for the links, hopefully I will be able to sort things out.
Thankyou for your help and advice with my small problem :D

My Computer

Oh yes i had experienced a similar problem my self with a relatives laptop, turned out to be a bad tool bar that had disabled everything in IE, one i cleared un-needed tool bars and was sure everything that needed to be on was on everything was fine :D Good call JMH

@ floss, i would still recommend adding Spy-bot and use it regular, id never liked virgin anti-virus on my sisters pc, she was the same as you stating that she also never had problems until one day her pc became attacked, not wanting to re-install windows i cleaned it up best i could, fortunately this gave me more in site to the way it worked, after several hours of inspection i saw heavy ram and cpu usage, seamed to be more processes running for virgin a.v than actually needed, if i remember correct there were 7 in total, upon further investigation virgin anti-virus would scan every time a program was stopped or started, also the package seemed to be bulked out with uslees stuff and installed into several unessential locations around the hard-drive making the AV put more strain on her system

if you wish for a more secure and reliable anti-virus then may i suggest Avast!

I my self run only 5 programs for security, 1. spybot search and destroy, 2. adaware, 3. Avast, 4. Windows firewall as standard with windows, 5. Firefox with adblock plus.
with all that said it is a very rare occasion i get viruses and mall-ware, what i do get 99% of it come from bad downloads from non reputable sources

Thanks Ripbox :) Had read through the sites that JMH mentioned and am in the process of removing un-needed toolbars, slow process though as somedays the computer runs fine. Definately need to look at a new AV programme.

Thanks again
