Memory Usage

Hey, I've had Windows Vista Ultimate for a while, and recently I've been noticing that the pc is using a large amount of memory. While playing World of Warcraft, it sits on 1.5 GB of ram out of 2GB, and everything slows right down. I also have 1 Firefox window open, but I added up all the memory usage in the Task managers 'Processes' bar and it doesn't add up to that much.

It also says I have 56 processes, only 23 of which show up in the processes panel. Im really not techincally minded, I just had hoped that when i first got this pc that 2GB of ram would not have been used up so easily. =\

Can someone please tell me whats going on?

:)

Something might be draining the memory. Take a look at process explorer here:

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

And sort the processes by memory by clicking the memory tab.

Then check out Autoruns here:

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

And disable unnecessary start-up items by clearing the check box. Don't delete the entry until you are sure you don't need it.

The processes shouldn't matter. I have 64 processes running and only 1.4GB out of 6GB is taken. Some program is draining memory.

Thank you.

I closed down all my programs and it's still running at 1.2GB Memory Usage out of 2GB.

I downloaded the Process Explorer but I'm lost. There is no Memory Pane, and I couldn't find a specific memory in the 'Select Columns' option. Is virtual memory size the same thing?

The longer your computer is on the more ram it uses so a restart will cure it for a short while until you start opening programs and such. Its also caching some programs that you use often in ram so they will open faster too.

Did you clickt the checkbox "show processes from all users"? This will show your system processes that are being stored in memory. This will show all your mem usage on processes. If you have shared video dont forget the pc is using that to play the game causing a memory spite that wont show up on the taskmanager.
I key thing here is that svchost.exe is used for your services and that may be using up alot of your memory. Try turned off some services in Control Panel/Administrative Options/ Services. I am sure that there is a Forum/Tutorial on here on how to properly choose which ones to keep and which ones to remove to make your pc run more smoothly. Also remove unneeded startup programs that are wasting memory also, like AIM or something along that nature. Turning off unused windows feature in Programs and Features can always help too, pretty sure a tutorial exists for that too.

Hope this helps.
