every other startup has freeze

odd problem, my coumputer will crash after 20-40min. on the first startup, then runs fine on the second, then crashes again on third and so on. actually more of a freeze than a crash, it starts with lag (either in game or on desktop, even crashed once trying to type this.) followed by a total lockup with sound Millisecond repetition. If I catch the lag soon enough either in game (any game) or music or video I can get out of program and hit restart on windows menu. If not, it requires pushing the restart button on tower. I thought maybe a prob with windows shutdown procedure as I usually start from full shut down on first and from power restart on second due to freeze, but further testing says no. My little brother used to have same problem on his rig but it went away mysteriously. I am, however, using his old 9800 as a physX card but that should not matter surfing forums or wiki or such, also he claims it quit long before he gave me his old card. That and Vista are our only two common denominators. we don't even play the same games as he muti's on the web and I usually turn my internet off when I game. I will try turning the card off entirely next, but if some sagely wisdom is found let me know.

actually, I bought Auslogics. wonderful program and well worth the $$$. and no, i have 8 Gb of DDR3 fully memtested and on the "good" starts I can run crysis full specs and am currently playing last remnant with nvidia controll panels max settings (which are far and away higher than the games and actually show marked improvment as AA AF and Vsync are not options on the game) my rig should be posted on my profile not sure how that works am new to forum

no offence taken just wasn't sure if you could see my sytem specs under my posts. If I click on the tab under yours it gives me it so what am I missing? Also, like i said I ran Memtest and tried it with only two dimms at a time (all possible combinations both in recomended slots and mixed) and still tested good nvidia sytem monitor shows low temps and occasional high hd usage but that's vista's indexing and can be turned off. also, had another anomaly while playing last remnant on this "good" start sound temp diasbled

What does event viewer say about the freezes. Are there any errors listed under the app tab? To open evntvwr type event viewer in search

New development: windows explorer stopped working when right clicking icons related?

Event viwer now working after explorer restart only error with corresponding frequency (i.e. once in last 24 hrs and roughly 10 or so in last 7 days) was no big surprise Last powerdown was unexpected

i'll post a link to the newegg specs unfortunately it's nolonger carried as they have a new model out now (not as cool looking tho) Newegg.com - ABS Tagan BZ Series BZ800 800W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Patent Piperock Modular Power Supply - Power Supplies I wish they still carried these I'm going to build a similar rig for a cousin of mine soon and the piperock modular design was great to work with. never buying another non-modular again! Also, on last "good start left overnight and ran fine in morning testing now on restart to see if it's just cold natured (I know it's not a car but that's the only way i can think to describe it. Once a mechanic always a mechanic.)

Update: Left system on over night on "good" start then restarted in morning. What should have statistically been a "bad" start ran fine. left powered off overnight and had freeze on next start. definately sounds like my 9800 is cold-natured. Thanks to all for help.

Are you getting BSOD's? If you are you can check it here:http://www.vistax64.com/software/219790-reading-bsod-crash-files.html

If your memory is ok, hardware is ok, drivers are ok, and Windows features fail, system fails and is unstable, then I would suspect corruption of Windows. Usually this can result from using reg cleaner/optimizers, malware, and even User error.

1. AVG is not a very good AV, and performed poorly in recent AV-Comparatives, I would not rely on it, doublecheck and scan with NOD32, NORTON, Kaspersky online scanners to verify you have no malware.
http://www.vistax64.com/system-security/162362-antivirus-scanners-internet-security-tools.html

2. Run a System File Check to check the system for integrity violations
note- follow this tutorial- but instead of the defrag command, use sfc /scannow
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/165576-how-make-vista-more-responsive-faster.html

3. Check your HDD that Windows is on for Attribute Corruption. (step 2)
(see above tutorial)
