going to try it now and will let you know. thanks for finding the info, appreciate it!!
download and install of serv pack 2 was successful... thanks a lot Shawn...
trouble is, recycle bin still not right.... good thing is that NOW it shows full, and when i right click to open it i can SEE the 2 files in there, so i click empty rec bin tab and i HEAR the sound, BUT files are still there and its still showing full...
i tried AGAIN to do the desktop icon switching etc... any other ideas? should i try these other fixes now since serv pack 2 is on?

Nancy,
In addition to Ken's post above, try Method Two again with the tutorial below for all $Recycle.bin folders on each hard drive.
Recycle Bin Corrupted - Cannot Delete File or Folder
ken i rebooted and its still the same... shawn ill try the fixes again and see what happens..
also method 2 is the one i DID NOT try. if you go back a few posts i said i didnt quite follow the instructions, not sure i know what to do
thanks
this is what i dont know how to do..how or where do i open folder options from desktop?? sorry im blank anymore and i only have C drive and D as well as e and f but C is my HD
1. Open Folder Options.
NOTE: For how, see OPTION TWO here: How to Hide or Show Hidden Files and Folders in VistaA) Dot Show hidden files and folders.
B) Uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
i followed thru the steps in method 2 and when i click on OS C the pane on the right doesnt have that $RECYCLEBIN at all in the list. so i cant click it and delete it if folder isnt listed
i figured out the folder options in control panel. i followed it all in method 2 but when i got to this part.....# 9 is what didnt come up.. i didnt get that box... but i continued thru and clicked F5 to refresh and what came up on my desktop WAS NOT a recycle bin but 2 icons that look like the config setting pic under #9.. it says desktop under the icon. i right click to open it and get these..in desktop-notepad
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183
[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Mail.lnk=@%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe,-225
so what happened, i mess up something??
7. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.
8. Click on Yes. (See screenshot below)9. Check the Do this for all current items box, then click Yes. (See screenshot below)10. Vista will then automatically create a new $RECYCLE.BIN folder and Recycle Bin on the Desktop for you afterwards.

Nancy,
If you have deleted the $RECYCLE.BIN folders on each hard drive letter in the Computer window and the Recycle Bin does not return after refreshing the Desktop (F5), then you can restart the computer to allow it to be rebuilt instead.
shawn
recycle bin, is still on my desktop and showing full.. as well as 2 icon pics that look like the config settings picture in your post... computer has been restarted several times

Nancy,
That Recycle Bin is being a stubborn one. LOL
As a test, create a new administrator account to see how it works in it.
