Vista Crashed

I have Vista Ultimate 64bit. The screen shows "reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot device in selected boot device & press a key. Does that mean I will have reinstall Vista? Which means I will loose all my data. I do have most of the info backed up. We had a power outage for no apparent reason. Probably a squirrel or something like that. It is on a APC battery, which closes down the computer after a period of time. Thanks in advance John

Hey John, welcome.

It seems that the boot loader was lost or corrupted, but we can repair that. If you have a Vista install disk, then put it in the drive and boot into CD. Then, choose the Repair your Install option, and then find the option for Startup repair. That should fix it.

Hi, I had a similar problem, none of the standard options worked for me. I guess because I tried so many things, I'm now getting a disk read error. I can no longer boot using F8 nor from the install disk. I'm using sysrescuecd to do an mhdd scan; testdisk doesn't seem to see a partition, so that's not working. Am I going to have to replace my hard drive?

LordBob, I tried that. Nothing. Progress bar came on at the bottom and when finishes all I have is the Vista color and nothing else. John

Problem solved. The install disk finally opened on the second time. I clicked on repair system and it came back "Cannot automatically repair" I clicked on "Problem details" and came up with the cause problem found. A hard disk couldn't be found. If a hard disk is installed, it is not responding. I rebooted and then went into bios and forced the ide in the drive configuration. It windows started up properly.:D

Langsey: I would try holding the F8 key when loading from the CD, then you'll get the menu options to either load in one of the safe modes, or to repair your pc.

lordbob75: In my case, if I load from the cd directly, I get the loading MS bar and nothing happens. I just tried loading into safe mode with command prompt, and the Windows drivers are loading, but it's stalled on disk.sys. Nothing else is happening.
